Too right

I bet there’s some awesome lots there.
Let’s have no anti-ferrism in here, please! ![]()
Today’s learning is that the reason we haven’t been able to open our kitchen windows for the last 21 years is that the (got burgled, turned into home security paranoiacs) previous residents had had them screwed shut.
And breathe
Just what you could get away with before Health and Safety was a thing. The nearly-a-hundred-years-old stuff starts at about 1 minute in. It’s not for the faint-hearted (good heavens, that asphalt boiler !) …
I spent the first two years of my life in Droitwich (my mother had been banished from her village in Herefordshire for having a child with someone other than her husband - the shame!).
Other than her brother more like in Herefordshire ![]()
The 60’s were swinging in some places but very much not in others. Still, I guess there was some anonymity in Droitwich, or maybe someone with some sympathy. At least you could listen to The Light Programme.
I spent the first 20yrs of my life there.
Those masts were (and still are tbh) a landmark for me as a child - nearly home from our regular trips up the M5 to see family in Solihull and Birmingham.
Drove thru Droitwich once. Never been back ![]()
Still got a couple of LW masts up in Cumbria. Primary purpose of the Anthorn one is VLF for sub comns, but it does also broadcast the atomic clock and still runs eLoran timing signal. Guesses welcome as to why.
The Skelton one at 365m high was primarily the Beebs SW transmitter into Europe for WW2 propoganda. Now just VLF.
No need, it gets its own Wiki -
Unsurprisingly… " Interest has been renewed by the potential vulnerability of global navigation satellite systems,[1] and their own propagation and reception limitations.[1] With reported accuracy as good as ± 8 meters,[2] the system becomes competitive with unenhanced GPS. eLoran also includes additional pulses which can transmit auxiliary data such as Differential GPS (DGPS) corrections, as well as ensure data integrity against spoofing.[3][4]"
Actually learned yesterday
various WhatsApp channels have been buzzing because it turns out that “Posh George” went to the same school as me. It has to be said that the more famous alumni tend to be a rum lot, including Aleister Crowley
The school doesn’t usually make a big deal of that ![]()
Neither does his birthplace of Leamington Spa. No blue plaque at 30 Clarendon Square…
Did attempt to climb Kanchenjunga though - possibly the first proper attempt of an 8,000m peak.
Madman, really.
Amazed his freeze-dried cadaver ain’t still up there, Mallory-style.
Too much heroin in his veins.
Mr Crowley, won’t you ride my white horse
Spank the Monkey is not what I thought, apparently it’s a childs card game.
I shall give my grubby little grey cell a good cleansing.
