If anyone is interested in the history of Singer, BBC Scotland did a great documentary on it a few years ago. The “factory” was 1.5 miles long, employed well over ten thousand and built the town of Clydebank around it. One in five households across the globe owned a Singer sewing machine. It was that important to the WW2 war effort that Nazis bombed the shit out of it as well.
Similar experience with the active 50s having heard them a few times - they needed an enormous amount of space to cope with the bass output, at which point they sounded just ok.
The sweet spot for my ears was the SCM19s which did have very nice mids at the expense of being a bit bass shy, and all ATCs have pretty poor top end to my ears I’m afraid.
I’ve only heard the SCM50ASLs once, at one of the early Scalford shows and was really impressed at the time.
When I was working in the Hifi shop, my favourites out of the range were thre SCM7s and SCM19s, I bough the 7s as th 19s were out of my price range, even with a healthy discount! That’s why I think I’d like the SCM20SL, or SCM20ASLT. I’ve not head any of the current range with the in-house ATC tweeter.
This week’s main downstairs setup is the Sabaj combo A20h and A20d in balanced mode running the new IMR Audio Na-le from the 4.4m balanced output. This is a great combo and I really enjoy this amp/dac, great flexibility and sound quality but highlights one of the problems with Chinese manufacturers in that the product doesn’t stay in range long enough. The dac is hard to get now and the amp was down to £80 on Amazon at one point last year.
Had no intention of buying anything yesterday as I was laid up with my back.
However this mini version of Jim’s deck turned up on fb ridiculously cheap minus tone arm.
It was in a sorry state as it had been in the loft for sometime,the rest of the hifi and records had been sold last year along with the tonearm.
Roksan (you don’t have to put on the red light) are a brand that have totally passed me by.
The pivot to spindle on the Tabriz is 222.5mm and hole opening 22mm. Luckily I have a rb250which is 222mm and 23mm hole,so took the mdf top plate off and gently made the hole very slightly bigger,then screwed the 250 in.
Gave everything a clean,new oil etc. The spindle is the thinnest I’ve ever seen.
I guess in the early 90s this was pitched just above a planar 3 with its 33/45 buttons making it easier to use.
It’s running slightly slow so guessing belt has stretched,so need to work out the length.
To be honest, you would have more joy emailing Vertere as there’s nobody left at Roksan who’ll understand anything about this thing. I’m sure that Touraj would sell you a belt for roughly the price of a terraced house in Scarborough too.
I called Roksan a few years back to ask some questions about an early Tabriz I had and Touraj answered the phone. He was brilliant, actually went through the old filing cabinets to look up the serial number. Unfortunately the paperwork for mine was destroyed in an office fire
