It was actually securing an amp that I knew would do them justice, that made me even consider the purchase. The amp determined the speakers. They are meant to be potentially tricky to get sounding their best, but I seem to have been quite lucky with this room.
There was a guy on the WAM who had apogees and ran them with two Krell KSA 100 amps as he said it was one of the only amps that could drive the apogee 1 ohm dips.
Can’t remember what I bought off him but when I collected he played them at ear bleeding levels so can’t remember how good they were.
That could have been Justin, although when I heard his, he wasn’t using Krells. The Scintillas are the really amp-eating Apogees. I think I’ve read that a certain Krell amp was actually developed to drive those. These are apparently quite a lot easier to drive. I think taking out the lowest frequencies is definitely giving my amp a leg-up. I know a purist would say I should really be running them full range, but with the pair I heard, it was with serious sub that the sound fell apart somewhat.. the ribbons would audibly rattle. I figured the best way to optimise the capabilities of my amp, and extend the life of the speakers, was to take that lowest end out of the equation. I do listen to drum and bass and dub techno
Cayin A-300B Mk2 arrived today for home demo.
What a beast of an amp - the Luxman is a dinky thing in comparison. I had a Cayin amp before the Luxman so I know they are superbly built things but this is on another level.
I’ve not heard a 300B amp before so it’s been a bit of an itch to scratch for a while - first impressions are holy fuck.
Are you still using Tannoys?
Heco Direkts - maybe thinking of Paul @hermit he uses Tannoys and Luxman ?
I do love a panel. Probably my next option once moved back to Strata and larger rooms.
Bingo, What don’t I win?

You got the ‘big ass’ bit right though ![]()
I’ve had a few hours listening with this - both CD and now vinyl and it’s the best amp I’ve ever heard (not a huge list admittedly
) and by some distance the best my system has sounded.
Having never heard a 300B amp before I can just go with what my ears are hearing which is really quite something.
At 26 kg it’s a bit of a beast so I was relieved to get it in-situ without any mishaps as all the weight is in the transformers at the back making it a bit awkward to move.
This is Audio Emotion’s demo amp so has upgraded Psvane 300B valves as well, an extra option, so I can keep it for a couple of weeks which is very good of them so looking forward to some epic listening sessions.

Fed up with the Luxman, Al?
Was it Dr Rock? - He had a Apogee set up at a Wam show one year
Sounds like a keeper ![]()
Down the 300b rabbit hole you go!

I would say I’m fed up with it G - curiosity got the better of me.
Great fan of panels here - Lovely looking systems
Too early to say Mike.
It is a very different sound to the Luxman but I need to be careful as it’s not a huge room and this thing is filling every inch of it. Which is fine tonight, as I’m in myself, but when SWMBO arrives back tomorrow it might be a different story ![]()
Sorry that should have read wouldn’t ![]()
