SOYS: State Of Your System

I recall hearing something very similar to these (if not the same things) at the secondary Munich show. First time I’d listened to a set of horns and heard such a really obvious honk to the sound. Definitely off putting. I hope for their sake it was just some unfortunate speaker - room interaction.

You know it’s going to be a shit day when it starts like this…looks like I’ll be listening to CD’s today!
Only a Rega Exact cart on my study deck, but it did the job. Cheapish replacement ideas? Can be MC or MM, or I swap in my Shelter cart from my main deck and upgrade that…

I’ve started enquiries as to who or how it happened, so far got this response…tmp

Looking back at the write ups it appears to have been passive with power going in just to run the display and the internal LEDs which would in turn have been having their output brightness adjusted by the volume control thereby turning on/off the LDRs

I am pretty clueless when it comes to carts. Only had a the Exact and a Shelter 501 MC.
Very different carts, the Hana SL I demoed was close to the Shelter, so may seek one out.
What do the AT typically sound like?

Hana SL is definitely a good bet.

I don’t know what the AT sound is, but I like mine.

I own and use both the ATVM95ML and the Hana SL.

They are both exceptional (possibly the best) carts at their price point but, the Hana is in a different league, as you would hope / expect for something ~4 times the cost.

That’s because you’ve got the dogs danglies of their range if I recall!

Probably sounds nothing like the rest of their carts what with the coil arrangement :grinning:

The Nagaoka MP-50 (now MP-500) was the best-sounding MM cartridge that I had ever heard, and while still the MP-50 a good value as well.

Thanks. James Winter & Son of Soho - it’s smoked oak in a Jacobean style, but dates from ~1860s.

It’s a bit parrot-chewed (former owners), but all it cost me was a rupture moving it, because a mate’s dad had died and the house clearers didn’t want it. More fool them, as it was about the only thing in the place of any value.

I always suspected that birds saw bulls eyes on our heads, this proves it.

If all a bored parrot does is shit on you, it’s been a good day - solid, seasoned oak reduced to powder :open_mouth:

Congratulations for reading the first post in a thread, try not to make a habit of it, it makes the rest of us look bad😁

Preparing for a potential Christmas issue where my music room may have to double up as a bedroom for a few days. Stage one “Can a basic streaming only system sit on the base of my one of my speakers and be reasonably operable?” = Perhaps.

Also having a change of mid/treble driver and I have swapped in a pair of ex jukebox box speakers I picked up for £25 for my open baffle supravox jobbies - Pleased to find that they have a similar and non rising frequency response.

Next job is make up a custom speaker lead that has a mix of bananas and speakon connections to tidy up the spaghetti effect at the back

Yep - The FR is all over the place otherwise.

More little changes - After a few evenings using my miniDSP and being astounded by how wonderfully tuneful and deep the bass was ( first picture ) because it was in a plonked sideways across the room lash up. Last night I tested the idea that my main system was failing me because of a mismatch and so I inserted different crossover unit in (second picture). This small change has totally sorted the major bass snags that I thought were room issues. Now Instead of 60hz the bass FR now doesn’t start to turn the corner until it gets past 33 Hz and the amplifier really keeps a proper grip on the 15" drivers. It’s only taken me three years since moving to get the system to work well enough to enjoy a whole evenings listening in the new house. I was very close to binning the whole OB bass idea.
Now I’m more sold on it than ever.

There has been a small casualty though and constant pressure on the RCA sockets plugging and unplugging has broken something inside my Nobsound and it hums very badly unless I wedge the back panel away from the main chassis. I have ordered a new version of it to keep me going as well as a few different cheap amp/crossover options for future faffing as I have some RAAL tweeters and some AMT drivers to try and hopefully later some horns
