Hyperfi have some good deals on the Japanese Super amps / cd players.
I bought my Rotel AV amp from them. Supposedly B stock. It was brand new in the box.

Swapping the Mojo out for a Sabaj Da3. £60 chi-fi dac/amp (output going in to the MT-602), a lovely clear small display rather than useless glowing balls, two outputs balanced and unbalanced and usb C input. No battery, driven from the USB of the lap top.

Nothing new, but finally managed to get the CJ amp in the unit after a couple months of sitting on the carpet.
Note the high end isolation, which actually solved a hum with my temporary position for pre and phone stage. Need to rebuild the shelves to the left, but this will do for now. Sounds good through the Gresham’s, just need a proper turntable now.

Was up in the attic sorting a few things.
Came across the 400Hz tractrix horns🙂
Instant thought was, Wonder what they sound like with horn length / mouth distance adjusted alignment?
Curiosity got the better of me!
Got them down.
Treated them to better damping
2mm self adhesive bitumen damping sheet. Was left over from another job.
I know someone who will approve!
More than tripled their mass!
Fitted to the Vitavox S2 drivers
Get that throat nicely aligned - critical
Both installed
Then I had to re-timealign to the diaphragm alignment, as these 400Hz Tractrix are 45mm longer than the Le Cléac’h 550Hz!
Then compute the new mouth alignment delay samples value.
Also realign the Tweeters.
Some 45mm farther back…
Listening now…
There some different detail.
Different presence.
They are more efficient, play at you a tiny bit more - had to throttle back the gain to the S2s a bit.

I said “swapped” out to do a comparison.
I also own 10 pairs of headphones/IEMs and several headphone amps.
I have several systems and enjoy swapping things around.
I thought it would be interesting to compare the cheapest dac/amp against the Chord. That’s why there’s a ? after the last statement.
I made no comment about the sound quality. The only thing I did (sort of) say is that the cheaper unit has a far better UI than the more expensive unit.

Some measurements
Tractrix 400Hz (Romy’s fav cutoff freq for S2s), vs Le Cléac’h 550Hz!
1m directly in front.
Without the phase plot.
I did a 45 degree plot but didn’t get the dB scale - it’s the same as above, give or take.
Tractrix came out slightly favourably I think.
I’ve been listening more.
This mouth alignment method brings out the strengths of the Tractrix, or perhaps that is, it reduces the strengths of the Le Cleach, when compared?
Perhaps that is more to do with the cutoff freq than profile - I do not know!
With diaphragm alignment, I prefer the Le Cleach.
That’s what I found before and I stick by that still.
With Mouth alignment the Tractrix are more direct and involving, the drivers detail and appealing tones more to the fore. I thought I might find it tiresome but I haven’t yet.
Less mouth rounding of the Tractrix means less is going out into the room in that supposedly harmonious Le Cleach way, than direct at me of the longer narrower Tractrix. Direct vs reflected sound?
I also do like a change every so often. This certainly affords me that - for free too👍

I have S2’s on 400Hz tractrix. They do need a bit of eq at 1k7 as your plot shows.
Yes, on my 550Hz tractrix and Le Cléac’h with a different make of cap (still 3uF), measured at 1m ages ago, they were flatter.
These plots are 1/6octave so it’s not a lot tbh.
Set them at 1/3 and it’s gone

How do you apply EQ?
First order cap feed. The eq is a passive notch filter. I like being able to run it all from 1 amplifier (apart from the sub) and although I can see the appeal from a set-up perspective, I don’t want to be digitising my sources. I’d one day like to try an active crossover but it’ll be analogue. Once heard a very good one at an ETF but I’m not sure it ever became a commercial item.
Don’t think I could ever undigitize.
Qobuz catalogue and use is just too compelling.
