SUT advice

I’m using a Vida phono stage and have two turntables in use most of the time.
I’d like to have both plugged in at once and switch from one to another using MM MC switch.
So
I need a SUT of the same kind of quality of the SUT in the Vida.
I use Art 9 / cadenza blue / oc9 xsl and contrapuntk C
So all around 100ohm load.
Budget is limited at this time.
What’s out there?

Aurora Sound SUT

Standard answer is a pair of Sowters and some light diy.

There’s a big thread with lots of useful thoughts and opinions over on the Wam from when I was in the market over 10 years ago,

No idea about the price, but assuming its fair I’d go for the HM3

He does one with the even better HM-7 as well if you have the money.

At the moment I’m in the under £500 area.
I’d love to try the Aurora Sound SUT but slightly over budget. Same for hm3. Might have to save up a bit.
I looked at Rothwell but I had a mate who had one and couldn’t get it quiet.

Would 20:1 be ok with my carts?

It gets so complicated with ratio and cartridge impedance - way over my head.

I’m sure some of the more technical chaps like Coco and Guy can advise.

As per the Wam thread I used a HM-3 SUT with a fixed 20:1 ratio with a Transfiguration Temper V which had an output of about 0.35mv iirc.
Fed into an EAR 834p sounded wonderful.

If you want to borrow my HM3 sut for a week or 3 send me a pm.
It does not have a bypass but will let you experiment with your MC.
From memory its switched for 1:20 and 1:40. Must be 7 or 8 years since its seen any action.

No brainer.:ok_hand:

Probably a bit much, the Ortofons are about 0.5mV output (at 1kHz, usual basis) which would nornally mean 10:1 with load resistors to suit.

yup, HM-3 is 1:20 or 1:40

I have a pair of HM-7 en-route from JP atm, they are switched between 1:15 or 1:30

the four MC carts listed are all 450mV to 500mV output, so a sut in the range 1:10 to 1:15 is probably about right, but if your MM stage has a high overload margin even 1:20 should be fine.
Then it comes down to whether cart is high or low internal impedance, and therefore whether SUT needs high primary inductance, or not…

Borrow the HM-3 and see how you get on, they are nice

I have an Audionote An-s1 with high and low switch if you want a borrow.

impedance will probably be too low for his carts especially if you have the S1L

It is not an L. Used it with my Koetsu.

I think it is 15 and 60 ohm.

The Aurorasound AFE12 is pretty good. Details below. I do have a couple here so you’d be welcome to try one. Has Low Medium High load options via a switch. Or the T10 which has 1:18 & 1:36 switchable. (38 Ohm/150 Ohm)

SUT on the right, looks cool. Nice to see them using a 401 & Viv too
