He does use the horn word. The central driver is at the least horn loaded. But seems it’s not a multi exit horn.
I’ve been playing around with the phase alignment of the system some more.
Initially it was to dial in the Peerless by Tympahny DFM-2535R00-08 HF drivers some more.
It’s interesting listening switching between the different phase alignments on the fly.
It clearly demonstrates what coherent phase alignment sounds like.
I have three versions of it. One with the MF drivers out of phase, but the timing done to achieve coherent phase, one with all drivers in alignment and again timed, and one where there are phase changes usually associated with crossovers, not timed much and wrapping phase plots.
They have slightly different PEQs here and there to get a nice Freq Resp and perhaps that’s what you hear a bit but the differences are quite stark, more than you’d think a dB here or there would make.
My current favourite is with the MF drivers out of phase! Just grabs me now somehow with it’s detail and dynamics.
Will be having a listening session with the Peerless drivers with @dom and @coco to the in a few weeks.
Be interesting to see what you guys hear with phase differences etc.
Heads up.
After 2 or so weeks of listening to the Peerless by Tymphany 1" compression drivers, I put the Vitavox S2’s back on!
The S2s slay!
I have never found a 1" compression driver I really like in comparison… laws of physics, my ears etc etc?
I am rather like this though…
Something new and different invariably sounds exciting and I listen out for changes and differences loving it.
Then ear muscle memory sets in and things are not quite so rosy.
Then switching back, it’s like - what was I thinking…?
And so it begins
Compound cut to give a 60° pyramid.
This is hardwood plywood instead of chipboard.
There will be bitument sheeting
Just got the 4th side left to do.
Gluing up and screwing together tomorrow ready for the tap and port drilling.
Need to get another smallish plywood sheet for the 2nd one.
We have the centre pyramid horn
You can see the markings for the taps for the LF and distance for the MF from the throat.
Made for 1.5" throat Vitavox S2 from the off.
Lots of filling and rounding to go - throating as it’s known in the trade😂
Bought more plywood today.
Can I get a pair finished up and running before @coco and @dom visit? That is the question.
Any design changes or just material?
60° conical horn, instead of the 50° you heard.
Wider dispersion pattern.
Some have said the 60s give a better central image. Room dependant.
Interesting, JW Sound was running more AI simulations and for the JM Mod mk2s he will be taking the final angle out more too.
Having lived with the 50 degree horns for nearly a year now,
in my longer and narrower room I feel 90 would be too much.
Similar to going back to the Le Cleach and Tractrix, where reflections are everywhere.
Admittedly they spray the sound waves everywhere.
The JM Mod controls the vertical pattern.
In a wide / short room 90 would probably be perfect.
Horses for courses.
I’ve no idea if 60s will be better than the 50s, but
Rout, Forrest.
I don’t understand what you mean.
That sounds like a you problem
Progress.
A pair
Next up smoothing the corner rounding filler and throats, drilling the taps and ports.
Then the geometric challenge of the flares.
The SH50s and SH60s do share the same mouth dimensions so should fit in the back boxes.
It’s going to be all the little jobs like the seating/sealing flanges, bracing struts between inner pyramid and outer back box, fitting/bracing bolts, mounting drivers and wiring etc that’s going to eat time.
Not to mention a coat or two of paint.
Going with a different colour scheme this time, black as a fall back.
Bitumen
Yes damn it! Forgot the bitumen - Boys from the blackstuff!
fixt
Progress on the SH60s
Not sure what colour.
Bored with black.
Wife likes terracotta.
Got Pete, Dom and Kevin here now having a listen to the SH50s.
You could go with white paint and flush mount colour changing led lighting for all the colours
That is HUGE!
