The all-new shiny cockpunch thread (Part 1)

No I explained your point, you’re just not understanding how business contracts work for mobile or data SIMs.

No, because telcos have learned their lessons about this kind of bullshit, it’s always terrible publicity which they hate, so there are effective measure in place to prevent it. You basically have to be a steaming moron and work really hard to do achieve this kind of thing these days.

I accept that. And yet, in 2023, EE still have a contract which entitles them to charge a select few morons £9500 for the streaming of two football matches while in Morocco. I think that is excessive and plain wrong. It’s penalising people for being morons or for being ignorant of how their contract works.

Clearly not universally effective. They could prevent it by not having extortionate roaming charges in the first place, even if they are only triggered in exceptional circumstances by morons.

As I understand it, said MSP has lied his arse off from the start on this so, I’m not going to be terribly surprised if it’s a bit* more than that.

*It’ll have been run as a hotspot from the moment they landed to the moment they took off again.

You may well be right but the BBC provided this table in the article linked to above:

So lets be precise: £9595.06 was charged on the days of the games for the consumption of 4460mb of data. To my mind that is outrageous.

This is getting really fucking tedious.

It wasn’t a personal contract it was a business one, they aren’t written or have the same conditions as personal contracts.

Unless you understand how mobile phone business contracts work you have zero basis to argue from.

EE business is capped at £45 but Scottish Parliament would have an open contract and their IT policy would tell users what their limits are.

Once again he ignored that policy

I get that. He was wrong. I accept that. Regardless of whether it was a business contract or not charging £9500 for 4460mb of data is ridiculous. Someone has to pay it should it beoome chargeable. In this case it has become due under the terms of the contract. All I am saying is that is a ridiculous sum to pay for a paltry amount of data. It’s a massive rip off.

Went past that the other day.

Was fixing summat for the hospital. Very cunty thing to do. The saving lives bit is nice mind.

Once again it’s a business contract, the terms are generally sort of swings and roundabouts.

We used to pay £5 per month per SIM which included free calls to UK landlines and mobiles plus a shared data allowance across 1000 users of 500GB per month and 50% off the handset price.

That is ridiculously cheap, find me an equivalent personal contract that gives you unlimited free calls and 500MB per month for £5 including a £500 handset.

If you go over those agreed allowances the charges are high because you are going off contract.

It has fuck all to do with whether you think it’s fair, in the grand scheme or cost of the contract it is fair

A £9.5K fine for watching an old firm (or any other) football match while on holiday seems entirely appropriate. :grinning:

Seems fair enough to me. Businesses that go off contract are effectively subsidising those businesses that dont go off contract. Built into their pricing model will be an assumption that a percentage of customers will go off contract.

Cunt should be dropped by his party, but nope, the party leader doubles down and supported him. If this was a simple serpent it would be instant dismissal for gross misconduct plus pay it back.

Let’s just say I have seen some of the inner workings of this drama unfolding within the parliament IT teams. They’re all rolling their eyes in disbelief and trying to make the most of what is happening.

I think it would be easier if the member in question just told the absolute truth about what happened and let people clean up the mess as best they can, once fully informed and armed with the facts.

The diving and dodging and political point scoring has no place in this affair. But it’s also not my place to have an opinion on the matter, as apparently I’m contractually neutral
