Local belief is that St Bartholomew’s church in Brighton was built to the dimensions of the Ark
It wasn’t, but it is bloody huge
It was built in one of the poorest areas of Brighton at the time, where the old railway sidings and works were located The old slums around it have since been pulled down and new slums built.
In the 19th century it was common the pew rents were charged and it effectively stopped the poor from going to church, so St Bartholemews was built without any pews or fixed sitting and it still has none.
It has great acoustics and classical and choral concerts are often held there.
ironically, although it was built for the poor it is High Anglican/Catholic and services are often held in Latin.
