It turns out that there was a branch of the civil service that he really wanted to go into because of his talents, but when he sent off for the career pamphlet in ~1984 it explicitly said that homosexuality and homosexual tendencies were not tolerated and all applicants would be investigated in advance.
Well done Thatch and your ilk, your bigotry deprived our country of a huge asset so he went off and made a shit ton of money instead.
