How dare you?
It’s not the size of your leaves it’s the length of your stalk!!! ![]()
Neighbour snooper
Needs more pampas grass around it.
We appear to have taken our eye off the courgettes ![]()
Tomatoes slow to start but going well now. Yellow mediums split faster than we can pick them, but the cherry ones are good and now pushing this crop on a daily basis
But…but…but they haven’t had time to ferment yet ![]()
Lot more apples than I expect from this wee tree. Better get looking up some apple recipes for the bank holiday weekend.
They look great.
If only I could take some credit. We moved here mid June and the only thing I’ve done to the garden so far is cut the grass. Been too busy with internal projects.
We have another bigger tree at the back, looks like cooking apples but not as productive. There’s a pear tree too but that isn’t doing too well. Autumn will be the start of the gardening work and there is going to be a lot of it.
Last weeks job was to hire in a Turf Cutter to make a new bed at the back between the newer fruit trees (Flat Peach, Apricot, Pear and Pomegranate).
As usual for this garden, uncovered plenty of old paving slabs, some I knew about as neat squares had the grass drought out last year and this, and others were ‘new’…
Paving slabs will be reused for paths through the beds as well as a decorative ring around the Twisted Hazel in the middle. Other shrubs are various Viburnums, Flowering Nutmegs, Daphne, Dwarf Lilacs and then some Salvias, Diervillas and various Roses to fill in the gaps. I’ll get a load of hardy Geraniums to line the border, mixed with some more Lavender and Nepeta and anything else pollinator friendly I find reduced at the local garden centre!
The overall theme of my garden is certainly Scented and/or Pollinator/Wildlife friendly. The border edges will be tidied up at some point too!
Other early Autumn job will be to assemble two 4ft raised beds for our small veg patch. This year I had just Garlic and Carrots (that our toddler sowed) so we will do those again, with the garlic going in before Winter. Location will be near this new bed, which is next to the garden tap to make it more convenient for watering with a can when we get next years hosepipe ban/drought!
I’ve a larger patch at the front garden which is a wildflower bed this year, had planned to make that a formal bed but that will be next late summers job as I need to plan the shrubs to go there!
The ‘Star’ of paving slabs will be orientated with the compass, for no real particular reason ![]()
And now I laid the paths this morning, a bit of planning where all the rest of the plants will go…
Love it.
It’s the complete opposite to how Hel gardens - no master plan, just evolve it piece by piece with a vague idea like ‘maximise pollinators’ etc.
I’m much more comfortable with your design approach ![]()
To be fair, up until today it’s been pretty much like that, making it up as I go but thought I’d plan this time to avoid ‘double parking’ as I’m moving a few existing shrubs as well as pre ordering some Bare Root Roses for the winter…
Vast majority of plants ‘installed’ just before a light shower, which was nice.
Four placeholder spots for two existing roses to move in and then two new Bare Root ones to get in the winter.
Job tomorrow, weather permitting is to plant out a load of bulbs. Winter Aconite in the ring around the Twisted Hazel, Tulip sylvestris, Narcissus ‘Sagana’ and 4x types of Alliums to be spread around the new bed and others.
