We haven’t had an actual thread about the band of bands. This is an oversight. They cast an enormous shadow over modern popular music and I find that I’m just as fascinated by them as ever, more so in fact. The older I get, the more I love them and appreciate just how great they were. Not only that. They had the good grace to fuck off before they disappointed anyone!
It’s the giant leaps they made, and how they were so open to influence, but then often took those influences and made them into something else. The fucking balls on them! Massive risks right through their catalogue. Kid’s songs, the avant-garde, rock n roll, it’s all there, and often on the same albums. Extraordinary.
I realise that lots of folk think they’re over rated, that Macca is a twee cunt, Lennon was a cunt, period and that Ringo drums like a child, etc, etc. But I invite you actually (argue about) discuss that. You never know, it could rival seasonal confectionary as a subject.
Was just talking to someone about Radiohead saying how it obviously gets easier to be more artistic and take risks once you become rich.(except Coldplay)
I rarely listen to them, but fully appreciate what they did.
I don’t think they can be ignored, and there is nothing ‘meh’ about their music. I get that their ubiquity for our age group is ‘a thing’ too. In my teens, you weren’t allowed to like them, either. But every time I’d hear Tomorrow Never knows, or Please Please Me, I’d secretly be in awe
I’d argue that it was easier for Radiohead to experiment tbh. There was a whole language of that by the time they did Kid A or whatever, arguably started by you know who…
Lol, actually, the Fab’s influence on progressive rock is one of their least likeable facets. But undeniable all the same. They had more taste, though.
There were a plethora of bands who tried stuff which led to something else. The Beatles were simply the most popular.
The originators, or point source of any creativity is impossible to identify.
Fanbois will always claim one. You chose The Beatles.
Think as they sort of laid the blueprint of change,it definitely became easier for others. Talk talk are another band that must of drove the bean counters nuts.
A day in the life is my personal favourite by them
Grew up with 'em on the radio, and as a kid I loved the hits - pop perfection.
I’ve never listened to them even once in the last fifty+ years.
I find this as odd as it is lazy.
Laziness is the main demotivator - I don’t know where to begin, and don’t want to buy a bunch of diappointing remasters stuffed with egregious outtakes and other tedious fanbhoi strap-ons.
I’ve never actually listened to a whole album. Closest I got was one side of the white album, and one side off sgt pepper.
They were so ingrained in me as a kid and I wasn’t even aware of it,which I guess is similar for anyone around my age.
It’s almost like they were put in your dna as a youngster.
