Was looking for the plane that takes them up as it still had its tether which it then dropped. Then realised they must be winched up. They asscent very quickly

Yes, they reckon as fast as any sports car. Quite surprising.
Just had a pair of the B1 Lancers come over really low, in very close formation*, with a glistening off the evening sun. Sounded epic but no photo as I was halfway through a nappy change with a head out of the window 
*There is usually 2/3 minutes between them arriving/taking off. Rare to see two so close together like that.
As they are so low at this point on their way back to Fairford we get almost no warning before they are gone…

When I was in Air Cadets we went gliding at RAF Burtonwood. We used to get towed by a yellow Land Rover, and then we’d try and catch a thermal rising off the M62.

We (RAF) used to get invited as just bods to fill out the viewing area … to the firepower demonstrations on Salisbury or larkhill … Can’t remember the exact place. Various nations dignitaries used to sit in a small grandstand.
Spread out in front of us for miles were various targets with lettered boards …some must have been the height of 3 story houses …and seemed to be in the next county. So far away. There were old vehicles (MT) spread around these targets. They were engaged by various weaponry .tanks …missiles …etc all live firing
At several points during the demonstration aircraft would engage these targets. So the announcement on the tannoys would go something like …if you look X miles straight ahead of you target Kilo will be engaged by 11 group A10s from USAF bentwater or somatt …using tank buster blah blah rounds …so you could see a small group of old MT painted dayglo …two A10s would appear from behind you and towards the target …then you’d see a trail of smoke puffs from the A10s …then after the short delay a big farting noise. …as all the MT was shot up to fuck. We all used to laugh at that point. .. 
Loved it when the A10s came …also saw Jaguars …can’t remember what other aircraft.

When I was based in Bulford we used to provide the range control PA and radio comms for those (well I was there in support as a tech so never actually did anything) I remember being at one of those A10 demos and also at a Lynx anti-tank demo.
I remember when the AS90 was going through field trials at Larkhill in 93 and they had 8x of them blatting out 3 rounds in 10secs. We were stuck in between the guns and the range and you’d hear a whistling as the rounds flew overhead and then the thunderous bang from the guns a few seconds later.

Amazing thing to witness. …also the …I think ..Challenger tanks firing rounds HESH and tracer at target Zulu which was a small hillock I think … getting severely re arranged …those tanks were firing from positions quite near us …the noise …aural and very physical.
Funny part was loads of shit being laid on to a closer target from a bit of scrub with bushes .. very near to us …rockets …gimpys …small arms .morter etc …it all stopped… then some of the bushes stood up and took a bow …and you could see em smiling…

Rubbish photo of the Goodyear Airship taken from the top floor of UCL Hospital yesterday. Many years since I have seen one over central London. Did a couple of trips around during the mid to late afternoon, but I am not sure if it was corporate flights or something else. At least the giant Kitten wasn’t around yesterday.
