I always found them painful to hear at airshows. They sound like a massive hairdryer screeching across the sky.

I was lucky to see the Vulcan at FIA a few times before they stopped flying, always seemed by far the most popular. Love it setting off car alarms…

mine were taken at Shoreham, it was a grey day. I had 1000s of pics from Farnborough, but I lost them!

We get free entry to trade and public days (although the latter are no more) at Farnborough due to Louise’s work

I used to go to Farnborough with work, when I was designing/managing the company stand, not been for a few years now though!

The book about the Vulcan and Falklands is incredible. The planning of the journey is just fantastic.

They have a Vulcan at Norwich Air Musseum that they can power most of the electrical systems, they do some very interesting night time exhibits with it. Martin Withers the first Black Buck pilot is often there.
XM607 the Black Buck plane is now at RAF Waddington. Me and @edd9000 had our pic taken in front of it a few years back.

Today, for reasons I can only put down to boredom and brain damage, I remembered that the Republic Rainbow existed;

Absolutely bonkers bit of kit at the limits of piston engine technology. 112 cylinders (four lots of 28), eight turbos, thirteen thousand horsepower and an additional thousand horsepower of thrust from ducted exhausts. The result could do a ‘triple four’; 400mph for 4,000 miles at 40,000ft. In a shallow dive over the place you were asking it to take pictures of, it could begin the run at 45,000 ft and trade 10,000ft for a photo run of a hundred miles at 500mph. One of the two prototypes photographed its entire flight path across the United States on 390 individual 10 in (250 mm) photos each covering 490 mi (790 km), which were jointed to form a continuous 325 ft (99 m) print in 6 hrs 55 mins.

It was, of course, a bit pointless. It achieved the curious distinction of being ‘too good’ for the piston engine era but not good enough for the world of MIG15. One prototype caught fire and crashed, the other was ‘expended’ on an artillery range in the early fifties which is a shame because it looks the absolute tits.

Shame about that first pic., Ford Tri-Motor cabin on a Concord nose came to mind and I can’t get it out of my head now!

Bloch MB80 air ambulance, as used in the French colonies. Probably a bit noisy for the punter…
