Quite funny this afternoon vaping on the front doorstep watching two massive choppers obeying the (20 mph) speed limit being overtaken by the Deliveroo scooter (on his phone, obvs) who DGAF and probably doesn’t even have a license.
The police set up a camera here a few months ago and it eventually looked like they were having to triage the degree of egregious Deliveroo stupidity with speeding, no insurance, no license etc.
Years ago I was accidentally on the side of the road when the funeral cortege for this guy
went past. Apparently the bikers had negotiated with the Met no speed limit but police outriders between the actual funeral and the motorcycle club hut.
Quite a sight to see hundreds of huge choppers doing 70 through the guts of the City.
Happened to me last night - I was doing 30 (on a 30 mph residential road) and one of them shot past me - so must have been doing over 40 - so close he almost hit my wing mirror. Made me jump. These guys are colossal idiots.
I nearly took a just eat guy out last week on one of those overpowered illegal electric bikes. I was pulling away and checked mirrors, signalled, all clear. Pulled away and out of the corner of my eye the guy swerved, crossed to the opposite side of the road and almost fell off. must have missed him by inches. It was about ten at night, he was in full black clothing with no lights, no helmet and going at least 20 miles an hour.
Fcking winds me up. Zero concern about their own personal safety, if I had hit him and seriously injured the guy it would have been me getting arrested.
I never get why the police don’t stop them. As you say, they’re all illegal. Electric bikes are illegal unless they’re limited to 16mph and they have to be pedal assist, the motor has to switch off if the rider stops pedalling. Instead they all seem to do at least 30 and are throttle operated, essentially a motorbike so should be registered, taxed and insured. The riders usually rent them.
It’s not for want of trying, often they fail to stop (shock horror) and then if they are not wearing helmets the pursuit will almost never be authorised.
It’s different when it’s a known person fleeing an incident or a level of risk can be accepted.
But as you said, they have no road sense and they can hit 40-50mph in seconds, it doesn’t take much for them to turn themselves to road pate. Sod me going to prison for causing death by dangerous driving for that.
I prefer working out where they live and seizing the bike when they next return or getting a warrant to search and take it.
Oh I get the futility of trying to stop some scrote on a Surron, but the deliveroo guys are everywhere and should be relatively easy to stop - or follow to their delivery address. Or go to the place they’re renting them from. Part of me feels bad for wanting them off the road because they’re nearly always piloted by some young immigrant lad who’s just trying to earn a living, but the bikes are heavy, near silent, and bound to be involved in a crash with a car or pedestrian sooner or later.
Round here it’s more often kids on motorbikes (nicked) or quads (nicked), tho’ scooters and ebikes are around. None wear helmets 'cos they know they then won’t be pursued (in the rare instance that plod are in this part of the county… Lincs constab. are desperately under-resourced). Never lights on on any of these vehicles. Often it’s pikeys who’ve been out on the nick (again, untouchable), but two of the worst offenders live in a decent-enough part of the village and seem to be actively encouraged by their father to scream-about at 2AM on unlit, unrestricted motos at organ-donor speed. See him in the front garden daylight hours fixing the bikes up.
When it all goes wrong, they are, of course, Victims. ‘Unnatural Selection’ in action I suppose, I just don’t want the cunts smeared all over my car.
a) I’m certain that I would need a license that I don’t have
b) it would rapidly become an expensive unused toy
c) given the sort of places I would want to go, when I parked it I would be concerned that it wouldn’t be there upon my return
The delivery guys all have pedals but because they don’t need to actually pedal to activate the motor (and they do more than 16mph), that makes them illegal. The 16mph cutoff is too slow, imo. I had a e-mtb and it was very hard work to go faster because you’ve then got the drag of the motor.
One thing I’ve never stood (among many it’s fair to say) is that most Deliveroo drivers seem to be on L plates. I would have thought it would be illegal to drive professionally without a full licence, but apparently not.
So fucking angry with myself. Had to pop to the shops before the football today , normally I’d have parked in the lidls car park across the road but it was packed. Rode around again nothing. Didn’t park on the side street as it’s running down hill so parked on the Main Street. Got off the bike and I thought it was level ground.
Turned away and just saw the bike rolling off the side stand out of the corner of my eye. Instinctively tried to save it but but went and we both ended up on the deck. I think I managed to soften the force of the bike hitting the deck as the only damage I can see is broken gear and clutch lever.
Me , not so good.
How I rode it back without throwing up I don’t know. Back is easing up a bit now but the back of my thigh is bloody sore.
Only popped out to get us a couple pasties !!! And I didn’t get them.
Now to find a gear lever.
