The Milk Float Thread

Everyone was awarded a small island in the Caribbean to compensate.

Here you go. Expectations being set.

Fun and games trying to charge the car today.

BP Chargemaster has rebranded as BP Pulse, and fucked up my account in the process. I can charge, using their new app, but it takes a phone call to get the thing to release my cable after charging. Average hold time is currently about 20 minutes, so that’s not good.

So today I went to the rapid charger in town, run by Electric Blue. Despite a call, that failed to work as well. They’re sending an engineer, but that’s not much help to me.

Checked on Zapmap and the station was available. Went there and there’s some cunty Range Rover parked there blocking the space, so that’s out.

The car is now under 25% and Claire needs to make a journey this afternoon that needs just slightly more than that. She won’t be happy.

Hence I still drive a diseasel

Adam doesn’t have a driveway, so him getting an EV was always going to be an “adventure”. Pls no feed confirmation bias.

It does fit my concerns though. Yes, I have a driveway. Apart from that my nearest charging station is in a hotel car park 6 miles away. Then another 8 miles. Well, you get the picture.

With the current infrastructure, and the issues I listed up thread, I wouldn’t feel confident just yet.

Yeah there are several options still available - I could drive it to Morrisons and rapid charge it there, or Claire could charge while at her destination in the car park or at the rapid charge at the Shell 500m away. But it’s nice to know when you set out that you can get back!

I understand that, but with a chicken and egg situation I decided that a positive action was the right choice. If you can charge at home then it’s hard to see how there would be much of a problem, and the cost and environmental saving are substantial.

quite a few in Hatfield - we’ve a few on campus that are probably not being used - visitors car park - Chragemaster

That’s the one that won’t release my cable without a 20 minute call!

It’s like a gentrified mad max with milk floats

Except when travelling beyond the range of the car.

Unless you were moonlighting for Hermes, it’s hard to see when this would even be a consideration.

If you are doing a road trip, then the local issues Adam described wouldn’t be a problem.

They will still exist. If I need to charge at some stage of the journey, some arse is blocking the equipment, another out of service, App not working. Ultimately I can’t walk down the road with a jerrycan.
Yes, it’s whataboutery, but it is a concern for me at least.

You have to look at this a bit more flexibly. There can be issues with motorway service stations being busy, Indeed that was a concern when we were thinking about driving over Xmas. However, there are plenty of off-motorway rapid chargers. I’m not suggesting to pop into IKEA to break a long journey, but there are pubs with rapid chargers, and supermarkets etc.

I’m not saying it’s without issues, but having to do a bit of planning for those twice a year journeys doesn’t seem too onerous really.

The key points on major routes all tend to have working kit.
And they all have prohibitive over stay fees. And enough parking for other cars.

So the broke or occupied never really applies to your long distance options.

Yeah

The Audi Duo III hybrid based on the A4 I mentioned is discussed briefly below. It was too early and too expensive, Audi finally produced between 50 and 100 units as far as I can read back from various sources. I was mightily impressed by that car.
