I confess, there’s subtext to this which I don’t think the article covers* but nevertheless, I suggest the Zoe contingent go light on crashing;
*Specifically, is this a newer version of the Zoe doing worse on the same test or a new set of more demanding tests being applied to the same Zoe.
It was 5 stars in 2013. But the tests and performance requirements have moved on alot since then, I need to read into this to understand the details.

No doubt ours will perform a lot better in a crash for everyone concerned compared to the 15yr old mk6 Fiesta it replaced.

I think that’s an absolutely vital sense of perspective in fairness.
From what I’ve read it seems they’ve actually altered a side airbag within or near to the front seats which now offers less protection than it did - that isn’t good at all.
It also performed poorly in the latest offset front impact test.
A number of NCAP points are for the inclusion of electronic driver assists, lane departure warning, smart braking etc. They aren’t standard on the current Zoe, you have to move up the range to get them all, so it’s lost points there too (our has them all at least).
Overall not good, I expect there will be a rushed atleration to the side airbags and more or less all the driver assists becoming standard.
Aside from my pragmatic comment which is valid, would we have signed up to it knowing it had a ZERO rating? I doubt it tbh.
