Capturing mileage at MOT would be the obvious one.
Except MOTs don’t happen for the first 3 years.

So it is either self assessment which is not going to be hugely reliable, or based on something like recorded MOT mileage which could be way out of date if it is paid with VED.
Why they didn’t just put the ‘average’ on VED is beyond me. That’s a ready-made, already administered tax collection mechanism.
Fuck that sensible free thinking, this is Government.
Got to have a massive overbudget IT system/database that does not interact with the DVLA and comes in £500M over budget 2 years late!
If they take a rough miles/kWh figure for EVs and add it as a duty to public charging stations they may find they are collecting nowhere near the value they’d expect given the prevelance of home charging. That’s what they’re going to do isn’t it?
Add the three year cost to a new car price or incorporate it into the leasing charges of a new car. The car companies and leasing firms will love collecting the money for the revenue and doing all the admin.
Revenue from EV tax is expected to be £1.1 billion
Government will outsource the mileage calculations to Palantir for a contract worth £3 billion.
Of course Palantir will use AI so it will be a massive win for the govt AI push ![]()
Self reporting black box on every car.
With a slot for 20p.
How will they adjust for overseas mileage? Or do we just get taxed on that as well?
Thought you only drove Porsches overseas ![]()
We’re taxed on it.
Personally speaking, I’m ok with paying £300 for 10k miles, the system as it stands isnt sustainable and Ive had a good run of very low cost motoring.
Its still far less than the pay as you go tax on petrol.
(To add, if i was unable to charge at home i would be less impressed however.)
It’s under consultation, no decision yet.
Still, I think that a flat rate that doesn’t take info account the weight of the car and its efficiency is a poor approach. There’s no reward for those that have made a better choice.
Well there is. Charging your car costs less.
Discriminating between Island and Mainland miles will be too complicated and laborious for the relatively small saving for a small number of people.
But wevs. I’m not EVing across europe anytime soon. Ill stick with paying the ppm cost on petrol.
You own a Tesla, the nazi choice - should be taxed punitively, at least 100%, for your terrible, terrible choice. ![]()
I suspect at least some of the Testapo are trying to work out if they can hack the milage readings.
Almost as bad as having a Porsche. Wait. Dammit.
