Looks like it’s fake news, the delivery - it only offers collection. Offer reinstated!

be-nibbled pies welcome

I tried the Sainsbury’s Shortcrust Pastry Mince Pies x4 as they are now down to 80p (they are the ones in plastic that look like they’re from the in-store bakery).

In the words of David Dickinson, they’re about their money. 20p each. Nuff said.

At the cinema I declared a personal mince pie emergency in order to justify the purchase of a Starbuck’s mince pie. Unfortunately, it turned into the equivalent of hosing petrol onto the Aga in terms of emergency resolution. Bah.

I quite liked them.

Me too. Had my third one out of the pack today.

Picked up a box of these at the services on my way home the other day -

Had one last night with some vanilla cream. Verdict - insides nice, outsides wank (too thick and undercooked).

Ha! I found them to be insides wank, outsides ok. You like the cherry bits in them?

I quite like a chunky mincemeat in comparison to the gloopy slime that you get in most. Needed a bit more booze so I put some brandy in the cream and had a glass of port with it too. I think most mince pie experience can be elevated with accompanying booze.

I couldn’t find a single pie I wanted to eat at lunchtime. Cafe Nero and Patisserie Valerie looked horrid. Sainsbury’s, Tesco and M&S were a little to far away. I saw a different variety in Whole Foods but they were Vegetarian and 8 quid, so that double negative made me fuck them off seeing as I would have to shoulder the entire cost, coz my workmates are on Annual leave.

So, back to the F&M from yesterday and a little internal for ATOC. These really are good, still questioning the overall size and thickness of pastry…

Pastry looks a bit thick

but not solid though - could be nice

When I worked at the Hilton I’d try and make the pastry slightly thinner

Yeah, it’s light though. Although these are very nice, I can’t help but think that the best I have tried have been small with bitey texture pastry and thin walls.I have a feeling that if these had thin walls, they would fall to bits. Good mince.

Yeah the pastry doesn’t look short enough.

So for that reason, I’m out.

Don’t be fooled by the pic, the pastry definitely has a high fat content and is light and airy. Maybe the chewy thing I like is a flaw…

Another batch from Alice. A bit more traditional this time, but still not perfect, she didn’t have enough pastry left for the tops, so had to go lattice…(or nothing!)
