It really doesn’t make sense for the monarch to pay inheritance tax. They would have to sell off 40% of the estate every time the monarch died, it would be bloody stupid.
Agreed.
The arrangement that John Major saw through seems a good compromise
But it’s alright for the rest of us
It’s a pity.We could all be ‘levelled up’ somewhat from the proceeds. There might even be a little money for useful stuff. Amenities in places that lack them. Libraries, sports facilities etc.
It’s not as if they don’t already put some out of reach in the Caymans or similar.
The Queen’s personal wealth was never really known to the public. Reasonable estimates reckoned she was worth a few hundred million. Let’s say 40% would bring in £200M. There are 66 million of us. So each of us would get £3, once. ‘Somewhat’ might be overstating it a bit.
£200M would pay the capital costs of some amenities. But not a huge number. And then we’d have lumbered someone with the running costs - paying the staff, basically.
The big money is in the Crown Estate and other similar assets. But the monarch doesn’t own these, they just hold them in trust. We (the state) own them. We wouldn’t have to use inheritance tax to get our hands on them. They’re already ours. We could indeed sell these state assets into the private sector though, if we were Thatcherite enough.
Somewhat will do for me.
Ha! Takes after his dad, bless 'im! Bloody Montblanc garbage!
So what’s going on with Spaniels fingers - gout ?
I mean, today alone I have yelled at the cat, a parking machine, two record players and a phono stage. I have done so without my mother dying a few days ago and having been the centre of attention ever since. I am prepared to cut him some slack on this one.
Edema.
That ain’t good.
tut, tut, American version of the good old British condition oedema.
Thanks Dad.
Fuck me.
Holding up a blank piece of paper is “heckling” now.
This idea that we ALL MUST respect the monarchy is pure fascism. It has to stop.
You think it’s fine to arrest someone for holding up some paper.
The world is fucked.
He seems to have been arrested again today in Cardiff.
That is clever, he wasn’t arrested yesterday and tonight he was being interviewed on Newsnight
Thinking about it…the guy I saw a report of being arrested in Cardiff today may have had a sign saying “not my king”.
You’ve always been able to arrest someone to prevent a breach of the peace. They probably assessed that he was going to write something offensive on the paper and therefore arrested him. Or they thought he was a nutter.
Hahahahaha, fucking brilliant.
I nominate this as post of the year.
