The shit that does merit its own thread

The royal household is exempt from the racial relation act and have their own ‘policy’ it is something that needs to be changed. I don’t care if they say they have their own internal process for dealing with discrimination complaints.

On the whole these acts are fairly well thought through and it doesn’t matter how well intended they think they are, having stuffy old arse kissing, racist aids writing the process is crazy and liable to bias.

All they have to do is say “from this day forward the royal household will be party to the race and employment laws and discrimination processes”, it’s not that difficult.

I think the current legislation is The Equality Act 2010. Wiki says it protects people in circumstances of “… employment, and as users of private and public services …”. I don’t know whether the reception at Buckingham Palace would have come under any of these headings (I suspect not).

There’s also the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006, but I think that only criminalizes incitement of hatred.

Dreadful though it is, I don’t think it’s actually illegal to be a racist or, in general, to say racist things in the UK as long as you don’t incite hatred.

We just have to hope that most people aren’t racist and to call out the ones that turn out to be.

Anyone been here ?

It looks excellent

Went many years ago. Yes, I’m a bit of a Giger fan.
When we arrived the museum was closed for a private event, so didn’t get to see it.
We did, however, go to the Giger Bar over the road.

Not been back but well worth a visit.

I’d heard about the bar before but not the museum.

I don’t think Anee would be too chuffed getting dragged in there. :grinning:

Apparantly alcohol is bad for you

From the “oh no” on the phone, I think something might have just put the knackers on Christmas.

My money is on covid.

WTAF is that celebrations advert going on about with the “whoop whoop” stuff. Am I missing some sort of amazing new internet sensation?

Boiler shat itself. Christmas is still on.

Glad it’s not just me.

Not sure if serving just 8 months of a 30 month sentence is really right but being hoofed out of the country is going to sting.

The Press Association news agency has reported that Becker will be deported.

Fascinating. And also scary in places.

Currently servicing a bit of stuff for Sellafield. in between scoffing pince pies. Thankfully this bit is not used on anything active. The other stuff we have up there keeps breaking as it is used to look at samples that are a bit too active for it. Takes while to fix as they have to don the radiation suits to do it.
Some of the stuff they told me about when I was up there is quite scary. They still can’t figure out, and probably won’t any time soon, a way to clean up/dispose of some stuff.

The north east.

Thank you for your reply; always fascinating to get a first person account of someone who works in a place like this. Didn’t realise Radiation could break equipment!

Quite scary!

A couple of friends used to live in Cumbria near Windscale/ Calder Hall/ Sellafield.

It is a fairly sensitive detector of electrons that keeps becoming dead after a few months. Think we have a better detector on the way. Probably means a trip back there soon. Yay.

All sorts of robots n stuff have been designed to help clean up some stuff, but so far they seem to die quite quickly.

20+ years ago I was told that the debris from the 1957 fire, including about 15 tons of more-or-less melted/burnt uranium fuel, is still in the sealed off Pile #1, including cartridges in and alongside the water channel behind the pile. They have built a few robots to try to clean things up a bit. Later robots lasted longer than earlier ones, but none of them lasted long enough to make any real inroads on the mess.

There is a lot of nasty stuff at Sellafield sat waiting in ponds whilst we invent ways to make it safe without making things worse. Awesome, scary place.
