The shit that does merit its own thread

Had an email frm NYT saying sub was going up from £12 pm to £16 pm.

I declined to renew and every time I pushed the cancel sub button they made an offer.

Final offer was £4 pm for the next year which I accepted. Bloody stupid gymnastics.

We have a candidate in St Albans, the Fighting Cocks. But they don’t claim it’s the oldest building, just some foundations.

So “oldest pub” is quite hard to define. Oldest building? Oldest location where it’s been used continuously as a pub? Oldest location where there ever was a pub, and is now? And there are often really poor records anyway, so verifying is hard.

Still a good conversation to have in a pub!

I think this chap uses the ‘longest continuous use as a pub’ definition. I think there are some old buildings that are in use as a pub now but haven’t always been & others where the owners/brewery have literally just made it up without any verifiable records or the science (usually dendochronology) to back it up.

That’s my favourite definition!

There’s a whole section about the pub research in his last book.

Still trying to work out if genius or the mark of insanity.
