do you need to get in the oil bath with the dial/hands?

Still very much do-able, albeit the paint version isn’t used much now, much more the little tubes that Ball and a fair few others use. I think Tritec will supply H3 paint in bulk tho’.

Has a half-life of 12.3 years, so depending on when he got it he may well have rather less of it now.

So a bit of a bugger to measure, but very important to keep outside of you if you don’t want to go the way of Alexander Litvinenko.

This is why the little glass tubes are more popular now, they have a useful life-expectancy of around 20-25 years (reported anecdotally - ā€œmy watch is too dim to read at night, wot do?ā€), then it’s relatively easy to pry them off a dial and put new ones in their place. In a reversal of the situation with the old Radium dials, I believe the phosphorescents used nowadays have a longer life than the emitter.

The tritium is far more valuable to a watch maker if it is no longer glowing and old. You can repair old dials and hands with the stuff and make valuable watches even more so.
It phosphoresces after exposure to UV light which fake stuff and modern versions don’t. I saw a small old vial of the stuff from the 70s sell for Ā£6000.

The glass tube stuff is to keep within the military regulations of the USA, otherwise no radioactive dials at all. The MOD gave up on them in favour of modern lume and digital stuff ages ago.

I have just addressed the Wyre Forest district council overview and scrutiny committee about their PSPO dog walking limit.

They are now dancing on the head of a pin trying to avoid answering my questions and making a decision. Predictably of course.
