Today I have mainly been V4.0 (Part 1)

No idea, no official timing, just (mainly) guys trashing their road cars.

But there was a very tricked up Lada which seemed quick

Ah. It’s a complete one off special that’s quite a regular up at the Paignton bike nights It’s gone through a few incarnations that I know of over the years. It’s based on an old Yamaha virago v twin motor. Really well done though and the owner is obviously more than a little talented.

Happy birthday for yesterday Simon. Sorry I missed it, I was out walking.

As far as walking around here goes, I did the Ridgeway40 (a one-day 40 miler) 5 years ago. and I was aware that the Oxon bit of the LDWA usually organise a supported 40 mile event each year. But I’ve only just discovered that since the 1970’s there’s been an annual 43-45 mile hike (in fact, a race !) put on in the spring by the Scouts https://www.hike.org.uk/. The full course is aimed at the older children, 15.5+, but all the same that’s quite a long haul given that there’s also nearly 4000ft of ascent and they’re encouraged to work their own way from checkpoint to checkpoint using traditional (map and compass) nav rather than GPS.

Anyway, the LDWA seem to think that grown-ups can register for it too. If so then that’ll be next spring’s challenge. I’m going to have to start stretching out beyond 20 miles. The walk starts and finishes on the west side of Reading. But given how far it is a fair chunk of it makes it onto the paths I regularly use. I tramped over some of them yesterday with next spring in mind (Didcot at the N end of the route, Compton down in the SE corner)

Out of interest, how long are you taking to do 24 miles Graeme?

I think my hip would disintegrate beyond 10 at the most!

I sweated a bit at the end to get home inside 7 hours, and just made it. I’m not fast, partly due to having to stop once in a while to faff with blood sugars, partly because sometimes taking in the view is worth it, mostly because of some kilos of lard I’m carrying in the form of a spare tyre around the midriff.

I note that for the full 43-45 miles the fastest scouts team (it’s a team event for them, but not a relay - they all have to do it) is 9hrs 13mins :astonished: Three Towers Hike - Wikipedia. Bloody hell ! They take it seriously though. A new rule had to be introduced a few years back when one team got a bit lost and found themselves needing to cross the Thames without a bridge in sight. They swam it.

That’s a decent time for the distance. I have walked 50 in 12 hours, but a more comfortable pace is 14hours. That 9hr time is impressive!

Edit:
This just appeared on Instagram, Dan is going to run it and try and break her record. But 5 miles an hour walking pace! That’s impressive

Impressive. I did 2.5 hours with the dogs yesterday and can still feel it. Lockdown flab+ not helping.

Thinking through how to migrate our business from a bunch of uncoordinated spreadsheets and documents onto a proper management accounts system to automate a bunch of stuff - thrilling.

Diverting myself by planning and prepping to cook 12 pizzas and various cocktails for tomorrow’s soire re Stourport Carnival and evening fireworks.

We all popped around to my Uncle Chris’s and Aunty Eileens house, great to see them again, it’s been AGES.

At Wide Awake festival in Brockwell Park, which is mad.

It’s kicking off at the back gate, security are backing away, and a gang of hard lads in stab vests marked “RESPONSE” are ambling up.

I think someone is about to have a breathtakingly bad day.

walked to one of our locals which over the past 2 years has been run into the ground. We thought it would never reopen after lock down. Last time we came to see the place they only sold cans of Carling

But rumour told us someone had taken it over…so we took a walk to check it out - sure enough, refurbished and decorated with beers on tap…a welcome sight, and way better than our closest local
