No soup for you Cretan post office, Royal Mail or some malign combination of the two

Possibly still on Orthodox timings¹, although that only slightly mitigates it.

¹ something that the Orthodox church has in common with HMRC and Cambridge University if I remember correctly.

We’ve now had a “not Grand Designs” quote of £7k from a local firm. We were going to go and see them last weekend but the trains were bollocksed so we went to the pub instead.

Given that it’s a fixed space and we’re attempting to look at a fairly consistent type of product the disparity in prices seems pretty wild.

Without wishing to intrude on the prime consideration of aesthetics with techy stuff, are the u values the same in each quote?

A quick squiz at several quotes indicates a complete absence of u value data

However I’ve now spotted the big difference. Despite being asked to quote for aluminium the latest lot have quoted for UPVC.

RM - my brother’s xmas card - postmarked mid-Dec - arrived last week. Many such examples.

My wedding anniversary card to Jan from 3 year ago STILL hasn’t arrived.

Must remember to post it this year.

We had a Christmas card arrive last week too. Had to pay RM £2.50 to release (the unknown item at that point) because the sender used an old, no longer valid stamp.

Ha ha, I had an incredibly obstinate older relative who used to do that.

“Remembered” (invented) an utterly wrong address and used a higgledy piggledy assortment of ancient stamps found lying around the house.

I have a distinctive name so I would still receive whatever it was accompanied by a surcharge.

It’s the absolute hit-and-missness of it that gets under my skin. I got a hand-written letter before 10am today which was postmarked 02/02/2026 - yup, yesterday. It was posted in Kendal i.e. 235 miles away. OK first class stamp, but since when has that made any difference (except to RM’s failure stats) ?
