Today I have mainly been V5.0 (Part 3)

Why do I recognise the Asian chap in the blue puffer and baseball cap on the end?

He’s quite a big noise. If money is the measure of success then out of the lot of us he definitely won.

It’s quite possible that you’ve run into him or even worked for him

Got them invading my lawn, the patch gets bigger every year.
the flowers have more or less gone now and I have done nothing about it which probably means they have seeded and I will have a bigger patch next year.

Enjoy 'em, lawns are overrated :ok_hand:

Yes. Could well have been on an investor call at some point. Assuming he likes a bit of PE investment.

That’s exactly the kind of thing he does.

Forecast was good so decided to take Harry to Tintagel & see what we could learn about the place and any connections between it & the legend of King Arthur.

The main attraction to this small Cornish village is a rocky outcrop just offshore now linked to the mainland by a fine cantilever bridge opened in 2019. On the ‘ísland’ are the remains of a 13C castle & the footings of many other small buildings which might have been earlier.

English Heritage manages the site of Tintagel castle which apparently irks locals as it should be Cornish Heritage and it’s also said by locals that they don’t run it very well.

Some of the issue is that they don’t make much, if anything, of the Arthurian legend attached to this place. This legend came about in 12C accounts of what had supposedly happened some 600 years earlier but there isn’t much evidence to support any of it other than there might have been a prominent king based in the South West at that time & even that’s questionable. I guess the locals want more made of it because the facts about & remains of the castle are pretty dry & unremarkable. The one thing that is potentially interesting is that when the site was properly excavated they found an enormous quantity of Roman artefacts there which does support the idea that Tintagel was a very busy port once trading with people from all parts of Europe while the Romans were running much of Britain.

View North showing the beach & the Camelot hotel on the next headland.

8 ft tall Statue of Gallos

Down on the beach there’s a large opening known as Merlin’s cave and a waterfall 30ft high tumbling down.

We climbed up the adjacent bluff called Barras Nose & enjoyed our lunch looking back towards the foot bridge & North towards Bude.

Heading back into the village I wanted to take a look inside the Camelot hotel (having been in the Excalibur hotel in Las Vegas.

A painted Aston on the lawn promoting an art show inside.

A bit more tasteful than Vegas. Obligatory round table.

Back in the village there was a reassuring number of tat shops selling witchcraft related ephemera.

Finally we looked into Arthur’s Hall which was assmbled as a collection of related items in a surprisingly large hall by some millionaire benefactor back in the 1930’s.

Lots of old helmets, flags, a granite throne, a couple of round tables & a popular space for various Arthur/druidy/pagan events to take place.

All in all a nice outing in the best weather of the year so far.

Norfolk can seem a little harsh, but you have to grudgingly admire their clear-eyed, pragmatic approach to old age and disability.
Buzzards gotta eat … Crows too.

At sky burials in Nepal a ‘body breaker’ dismembers the corpse to make it easier for the vultures.
Not sure why they wrap them up in cagoules in Norfolk?
But crows are very clever, so maybe they like the challenge?

I’d hope the badgers are doing their fair share, too - unless they’re all in Sussex building valve amplifiers from biscuit tins…?

Some rather lovely pagan shops in Tintagel — possibly the best attraction is the King Arthur’s pay-and-display car park, which is simply perfect.

There was talk of a local landowner telling Disney to fuck off when they wanted to buy him out and build a theme park. Not sure what the rest of the skint residents made of it, but c’est la vie.

We parked in King Arthur’s car park. He’s bestowed the honour of operating it to Ringo after they successfully pulled a parking meter from a pavement.

The ‘could have been a theme park’ was at nearby St Nectan’s Glen where the owner apparently rejected an offer from Disney valued at several million for the land & spectacular waterfall. Good on him.

I’d like this twice if I could :ok_hand:

It’s been 35 years since we spent our Honeymoon down in Devon and Cornwall.

Our visit to Tintagel was well before the bridge, and in the days of Jacob’s Ladder.

We stayed in a place called the Tintagel Arms Hotel & Zorba’s Restaurant. Close to the oldest postbox.

The Castle Carpark was £1 all day.

Good times !
