Enjoying, or rather enduring, a random power outage, not weather related for a change. Itâs just starting to get dark so oil lamp lit, a few candles dotted around and the radio is on.
Must only be local to our island as the mobile is still working (if Yell loses power our signal disappears)
SSEN just sent an SMS to say it should be restored by 3am tomorrow

SSEN are also my DNO (the people who actually deliver the electricity to my property, as opposed to the people who charge me for it). They told me a couple of weeks ago that theyâll be switching me and a few neighbours off at breakfast time on Thursday while they replace a couple of telegraph poles. Apparently we âshould beâ back on by 14:00.
I dug my generator out of the garage on Friday, checked it over, put some petrol in and ran it for 60 minutes. Iâm not expecting to be âoff airâ for more than a few minutes on Thurs although obviously the genny canât deliver as much power as the local substation.
I just need to check with the guy in charge on the day that he trusts my two-pole isolator to keep his people safe. He can always pop the meter tails out if he doesnât.

Sunday:
After a fry up in The Valleys, we did the M4/M49/M5 three step. Down to Exeter to visit Nâs elderly cousins (both 89).
Lunch at the Tally Ho! Inn.
Back to their townhouse to chill after a busy few days.
Today will be driving back to Oxfordshire on a Bank Holiday Monday. Wish us luck.

So, 4 hours in total with one coffee and pee stop.
Bumper to bumper on A303 near Stonehenge (we expected that), but A34 was more miserable than normal. Off at The Ridgeway junction and then x-cuntry.
Back in village at 1300, then straight to the pub for lunch. No pizza today. Just Chicken Caeser, as weâve been eating shit all weekend.
Now chillinâ. Which is nice.

Iâve spent the day dismantling wardrobes and a chest of draws, moving them into another.room and building hi-fiâish furniture to make a bit bigger, more music friendly listening room.
.Getting there, just need to populate with a few records.

managing to sleep straight through a 1 AM three alarm fire regarding MiL.
The wife flies out around noon and it looks like Iâll be on my own for the foreseeable.

I did this routine loads of times for my mother, but while getting to Malvern in a hurry was a pain it was nothing like getting to Northern Ireland.

SSEN guy was fine with me using my generator. Pretty much the first thing he did was to disconnect my supply cable from his mains junction box so whatever I did wouldnât have affected his people anyway.
From my point of view all went well. The genny worked. The old pole was dug up and a new one put in. All of SSENâs cables and the street light were reattached and, right at the end, my cable was reconnected.
I was lucky. Literally as he was tightening the screws on my cable the Left-Right control on his cherry picker failed. They tried to fix it but couldnât. So at about 11:30 they gave up for the day and left. All my neighbours, who had made arrangements to be without power today, didnât have theirs switched off or âtheirâ pole replaced. They may not be pleased when they find out theyâll have to make the same arrangements again when the jobâs rescheduled.
