No expertise whatsoever and I’m just adding encouragement.
I’ve been walking around the house barefoot for ages but I have only been buying cheap crap for footwear. Latest ones are now hurting my heels due to loosening in the fit. Something like this look nice and I think I’ll get some.
How fucking old are we that no-one’s even mentioned leg spreaders yet…

Early 90’s we used to buy altbergs as they were great for tabbing. The US army issue Matterhorns were also fantastic for tabbing and keeping feet warm but probably impossible to get hold of now.
When I knackered my knee I started using sorbathane insoles with the altbergs and they were fantastic.
Go for the altberg as they definitely don’t scrunch the toes, don’t buy the MOD issue defender ones though, make sure they are from the richmond factory.
I’ve got some black altberg.
Super comfy and going back for a resole soon.
