Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has advised against releasing a report into allegations of misconduct against Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, who is Trump’s pick for US attorney general.
“I’m going to strongly request that the Ethics Committee not issue the report because that is not the way to do things in the House, and I think that would be a terrible precedent to set,” he told reporters.
He quit the House of Representatives earlier this week, shortly after Trump made the announcement of his post in the new administration.
His resignation meant that the current House Ethics Committee investigation into him was effectively halted as only members can be investigated.
“The rules of the House have always been that a former member is beyond the jurisdiction of the Ethics Committee,” Johnson, who met Trump at a Mar-a-Lago gala last night, said.

It’s a tenuous argument - just because they cannot bring formal punishment because he’s outside their jurisdiction doesn’t mean they don’t have a duty to the public to report the facts as found.
