Currently struck by how the Yiddish seems to be mostly German and is readily understandable.
Sorry, I have no intention to offend, just interested in languages and difference.
I always thought that yiddish was a german dialect, went to Koln a few years ago when they were digging up the old jewish area and they were saying it’s very very old germanic.
Mostly right, Yiddish means Jewish in German. The language itself is somewhat of a melting pot but is mostly Germanic (Spoken mostly by Ashkenazi Jews.)
I’d read the same, but never (to my knowledge) heard it spoken.
As I said, I was just surprised that I could understand what was going on.
