What I'm watching (Series 2)

Thanks. Will record that.

Missed this when it came out and wished it had stayed that way.

What an absolute pile of shite, Rafe Spall seems to maintain a permanent state of gormless stupor.

Such a pity - it would have been good to see a version as originally imagined by H.G.Wells for change.

Fucking adverts on Prime.

Just fuck off!

Just finished the second season. Each episode had the bleak desperate tender moments interspersed with genuinely funny scenes you’d expect from season 1. I was wondering how season 2 would shape up and the first few episodes were perhaps not the strongest but the last few were quite something. what makes things a little more impactful is knowing much of the basis of the show is coming from her lived experience which pulls the heart strings all the more.

Die a widower without a Will in Lancashire and your estate goes to the Dutchy. Whilst traditionally sold and proceeds go to charity it has been used by the Dutchy as equity against loans.

Why the fuck this is even a thing beggars beleif.

A lot of this programme details the money grabbing activities of the Duchy of Cornwall in our area ie charging the state to use the currently unfit for purpose (and closed) Dartmoor Prison & some local schools. Charging the state for the use of Dartmoor by the military for training. Charging for various land uses around Devonport & for mining & quarrying further up the Tamar. Damaging the landscape/beaches around Newquay with ill advised property developments etc. Plenty of examples in your neck of the woods too ie charging for the routing of power cables from windfarms across ‘their’ shore line, charging for use of waterfront on Merseyside along with charging the NHS for the use of hospital buildings etc. The two Duchies should be disbanded & the land transferred into the Crown Estates where at least they can be taxed as any other business would be & some of that would come back to the state. These c**ts get enough funding as is.

Wort it. Clearly looks as expensive as it I know it cost.

Typical one person in the office does it all fail, but you can over look that.

The story of an American war photographer, Lee Miller, played by Kate Winslet, who ended up documenting the allied advance across Europe including the liberation of Paris and culminating in Munich where she took photos of Dachau and Hitler’s apartment.

Winslet spent many years getting the project to fruition.

It’s an engaging story, very well told & well worth a watch. Surprising to learn that the pictures, taken for Vogue, weren’t published by the magazine in the UK (too disturbing) and only a few were published by the US version.

Looking forward to seeing that. The trailers look good.

Raped and very badly injured as a child by the home help.

Rocked up in Paris and told Man Ray “I’m your muse now”.

Roland Penrose taught camouflage classes with illustrations of “here’s my naked wife with some paint on her body” - these were apparently very popular.

What we’d now call PTSD as a result of the camps, which led to alcoholism. She seemed to find some solace in cooking.

We wouldn’t know who she was had her son not found (effectively) her archive in the loft after she died.

Warhorse. Again.

Always turns me into a pool of emotional mush.

Fuck you. Steven Spielberg. Fuck you.

We are going to see the stage show in May next year, very much looking forward to it.

I still find it amusing he and his crew set up basically a small town in a pretty remote corner of Dartmoor to film the farmhouse scenes. (Ditsworthy Warren) and were there for several weeks. Although if I recall they used Castle Combe (Wilts) as the Devon village for some reason. It is a good film (& good story) though.
