In Kill Bill Tarantino did an expert job of reference and homage to Japanese and low budget cinema, at least in the first film (second one lost its way very badly).
This isn’t that, it’s very much wink over substance.

Master & Commander Film4. Properly good historical drama
It’s capeshit - that’s its whole entire USP right there.
Mindless, stupid, childish, violent fun. Works for me ![]()
So as mentioned elsewhere, last night I went to see Mogwai: If the Stars Had a Sound.
If you’re into the band it’s a strong recommend. Fairly light on the talking heads that usually fill out music documentaries. Ian Rankin did indeed just seem to be “random Scotsman” but I didn’t realise how closely intertwined they were with Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand.
The wife asked if the cinema was busy and for 6.10pm on a piss-poor evening in Brixton it was pretty full. Although most of the audience wouldn’t see 50 again and none were under 40, and there was precisely one non-white face which isn’t very representative of the local demographic ![]()
The Listeners on BBC. Like something they made in the 70s to scare children.

This is good.
We’ve not long finished it. Really enjoyed it.
I don’t think Mrs P has hated a fictional character as much as John Paul.
Yeah, absolutely horrible cunt - well acted!
Loving the PJ Harvey sound track too
Ripley

This is an absolutely fantastic 8 part series, far better than the 1999 film.
Shot almost entirely in Black & White with every image & scene a work of art and featuring a chilling performance from Andrew Scott.
We also enjoyed that much of it takes place in Rome & on the Amalfi coast in many of the exact places we visited in June. Set in 1961/62 and told in a Noir style it’s gripping throughout. Wholeheartedly recommended, probably the best tv I’ve seen this year.
What service is that on, Guy? I really like the film ![]()
Netflix I think
Netflix.
Forgot to mention the Caravaggio theme running through it as well.
And how does Johnny Flynn manage to be a serious actor while also being a fine folk singer? (not that he sings in this)
Right, take 2 on flying solo for a few days.
This is what I have lined up for my viewing pleasure.
Subject to change of moods.
Diva’s a great film - really stylish.
I got two episodes into it and baled-out - I can’t even really say why, beyond losing interest. Do agree the cinematography is absolutey first class.
Perennial favourite since I was a kid.
The jeopardy aspect does wind up as it progresses & it’s a reminder of how modern communications would make such activity impossible nowadays such is the ease of sending pictures/ID etc around.
Did you ever get to watching the 1st season of True Detective?
No, slipped my mind - really enjoyed ‘Night Country’ ![]()
