Gotcha ![]()
Went to a stand-up night last night, which was a lot of fun. Featured possibly the funniest opening line for an act that I think I’ve ever seen, and remarkably understated at the same time. This clip isn’t from last night, but it’s the same guy/line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxyzW6feTi0
Unable to help with all of it but S1 below, tempted myself.
Thanks , think I’ll go for that.
Much appreciated.
An unusual film from 2024, vaguely set in some imagined 17C(?) community in Scotland whose inhabitants are cleared off land they are living on by unscrupulous land owners looking to make it profitable by turning it to sheep farming.
But it has a very distinctive style & folklore reminiscent of maybe the Wicker man although it isn’t a horror film. It’s also not seeking to be absolutely period realistic either in the clothes, location or the language used. It did get some savage reviews on its release but I quite enjoyed it. It did also convey a feel for the randomness, superstition & lack of order that might have prevailed in such communities back then.
Looking forward to this new Leonardo di Caprio film One Battle After Another which sounds promising & topical. Might be a couple more weeks til I can sit in the cinema for 2 hours comfortably anyway.
But a review reminded me I’ve still got another Paul Thomas Anderson/Thomas Pynchon collaboration to watch here in Inherent Vice. So that and a few Robert Redford films are lined up for the next few days of loafing. ![]()
The Trump Show
What they have done is stitched together newsreels into a time order and made it appear to be a kind of fly on the wall documentary complete with narrative.
It’s bloody brilliant.
Ch4.
Really tight spy thriller featuring Robert Redford & Faye Dunnaway. as recommended by @crimsondonkey
Seems complex but they do explain it well enough.
Fab soundtrack by Dave Grusin too
Must have seen that three or four times now.
Watched Spy Game again this week.
A few more I need to revisit, too.
10 mins in and it’s fucking awful
fucked it off into the long grass
Got to watch episode 5 today and it could well be the best so far. Even (surprisingly given the subject) got close to passing the Bechdel test.
I’d never heard of that but it seems a valid metric.
Season 5 finally landed in today. Assuredly curmudgeonly irascible turn from G.O. Enjoyable & absorbing as ever, high bar drama with well judged darkly comedic moments.
Late to the party on this, but it’s the best thing i’ve watched in a while, terrific performance from Hugh Grant and thought provoking.
