For busy summer reasons, I hadn’t managed to make it to the IMAX to see Nolan’s Odyssey. I’m a stickler for seeing things on IMAX when the director recommends it, so I was somewhat gutted about that, but had let it go. Anyway it was my birthday last week, and casting around for something to do, I discovered Plymouth IMAX was STILL showing it, and the very last showing was on my birthday. Rude not to. So I finally saw it. The cinematic equivalent of being chucked into cold water! Mostly I loved it. I wasn’t much aware of the tale, so I was quite taken aback by how dark it was. But still it was riveting. On an aesthetic level, quite unlike anything I’ve seen before. Annoyances: they could have dialled back on the use of modern English language and terminology a bit (“I’m going to look for my Dad” in a heavy American accent, and I’m sure “Port and Starboard” weren’t a thing in Ancient Greece). But really those were tiny flaws in an otherwise excellent movie. I loved the conclusion of the story, and how exhilaratingly it was executed. Awesome stuff. It would be good on any screen, but really glad I managed to catch it on IMAX. The heft of it was insane.
