Favourite drummer for me is probably John Henry Bonham. But i also really like Art Blakey, Billy Cobham…

Have seen Billy Cobham live twice now, once playing his own stuff, and once playing with a Cuban band. Serious talents, and also not one to play inappropriately complex shit just because he could when it would have run against the music.

Chris Sharrock (Icicle Works, the La’s, the Wild Swans, World Party, The Lightning Seeds, Robbie Williams, Oasis, Beady Eye, High Flying Birds). is just amazing, power combined with subtlety.

Saw the Stones earlier this year and Charlie still has it, despite making Keef look young…

I would go for Seb Roachford, Simon Phillips or Bill Bruford - I have seen Billy Cobham and Keith Moon.
There is a large herd of excellent drummers about though.

Bruce Mitchell of the Durutti Column wins the competition if the drummer must be alive. Myriad jazz drummers if we allow for those who have departed.

Ringo ftw

I’d have to put Omar Hakim, Vinnie Cauliata and Manu Katche right up there.

Some frightening playing between them at times!

And Steve Gadd. Ridiculous talent there

Seen him with King Crimson -they had three drummers on tour , he was one of them

I like (in no particular order)

John Bonham
Ginger Baker
Levon Helm (yes, I really did say that)

John “Stumpy” Pepys
