Wireless speakers

Need some advice for wireless speakers please.
Unfortunately Mrs Ps condition has deteriorated and she is now bed bound.
She would like some music in the room, would be using Spotify premium on iPad.

I know nothing about what’s good or not.
Is Sonos still the go to? Is the base model ok?
What alternatives should we consider?

Depends on budget,

I use one of these in the kitchen, and the sound quality is pretty good. Portable smart speaker so you can use voice control or phone or tablet.
It defaults to Spotify Prime for specific album requests etc with voice control.
If wi-fi not great in bedroom it will work on bluetooth
Mine is a few years old now so @Tons_of_fun will be more up to date with current offerings

As a previous Sonos owner and enthusiastic about it long time ago, I got pissed off when they changed software that made part of the components defunct.
Not sure whether other manufacturers have the same cuntish policy.

I switched to Bluesound then (streamer only) and was happy with that until I switched to Roon.
You should at least audition Sonos vs Bluesound imo.
Good luck with your choice.

No time for auditions, this is a buy and use scenario.

To make life easier I’d suggest a voice controlled one, Alexa is very good.

I’ve got an Amazon Spot in the bedroom and it has fairly good sound and the voice commands are nice.

I won’t touch Sonos after their recent fucktastrophy with app updates etc.

Outside of much of my knowledge, but JBLs offerings are supposed to be pretty decent and do the Airplay thing.

Unfortunately voice control isn’t an option for her.
What’s the issues with Sonos app?

They fucked it up recently, took away a load of features and were just a massive PITA.

No idea if they have fixed it or not as I’m not using it now.

I’ve also got a JBL charge 5 that I use in the garden with BBC sounds via bluetooth, also has good sound

Really sorry to hear your wife’s condition has deteriorated Andy.

I have a JBL Xtreme 2 portable bluetooth speaker and it’s very very good - I think Mike @MJ2 has the smaller version to mine. You might be able to pick one up reasonably cheap in the Black Friday deals.

A JBL Charge 5 isn’t too big & the sound is fine.
Easy Bluetooth hookup too.

Size not an issue really.

Just a decent sound and ease of use

Good idea. Mine is Charge 5, great piece of kit.

Got to say I really like my Naim MU-SO QB

It isn’t “hifi” but then neither are the alternatives getting a mention here.

Super easy to use, decent sound, unobtrusive looks.

£700 - ish

I have a couple of pairs of these

High-end they ain’t, but there’s a decent amount of bass and they’ll go quite loud. They need mains power but come with a remote for input select, volume, muting etc. They’ll connect via Bluetooth. Two separate speakers also means stereo is, well, stereo.

There are a few on eBay too.

Seems JBL are popular. I do like the look of the Naim thingy, not my decision tho.

The JBL are cheap for what they do, remarkably well for the price. The Mu-so does sound and look better imo, but, for a LOT more money.

Money not too much of a problem but the Mu-So is at the higher end of what we would spend.

If you’re ok with SH there are a a few on eBay (1st Gen - same as mine) for £325 - £350

Thanks, time is short so will likely buy new locally, once she decides what to get
