Precisely this, Putin loved the mediocre sanctions, it helps bolster the ‘evil west’ narrative he nationalistically expounds. The taking of Ukraine is yet more of the same, a power grab for the glory of Russia. It’s the big guy in the pub punching the little guy and feeling all powerful as his mates (State controlled media) lick his ass.
By presenting the largest deterrent to an aggressor that we can , If that fails then that we are actually capable of defending ourselves and our NATO allies , In the current crisis we haven’t reached that point as yet.
The past and present heads of our armed forces haven’t been arguing against the cuts to our capability for no reason.
Those nukes were money well spent.
Or one could argue that NATO’s nuclear capability has kept Putin in check for many years up until the point that he went mad.
lets hope we prove that by not having to use them in retaliation.
Ch4 news knocking it out of the park again.
Good to see a lot of big protests all around Russia against this - especially given the personal risks for them.

Indeed it does, 2 pairs of varifocals for £99
I really really hope so but he may not have been expecting such big protests - I’d imagine we’ll see the same reaction to mass protest as that in Belorussia.
That said, they are a damn sight braver than we are here when it comes to decisive protests - fingers and toes crossed it is the beginning of the end of his regime.
Would be great to see his own people topple him.
A Russian pundit with connections was commenting earlier today that Old Shark Eyes has never really gotten over the fall of the Berlin Wall and the re-unification of Germany …
Never underestimate a disappointed man.
She was unhelpfully brutal with Matt Frei’s opening question (something gentle, along the lines of So, have today’s events fundamentally changed the way the west is going to have to view Russia ?). She didn’t actually say Durrrrr … what fucking planet have you been on for the last 18 hours ? but she came as close as she could on before-the-watershed TV. I’m not sure we’ll be seeing her again on C4 News will we ? Or did I misread the ‘atmosphere’ completely ?
