Just need to say that given your space you should obviously get a tapped horn and a MEH. I feel duty bound to point out that everyone on here who genuinely went to the dark side of horns basically now has a room full of 1930s landfill and a wildly expensive therapy/drug habit.
Not far off the truth!
I think it’s just one of those things you have to try at some point.
Yes but the MEHs look great as it’s just the box footprint.
It is until you want sub bass.
Yeah well, that’s the same with anything ![]()
it’s time to confess and say I really don’t like the looks of meh’s
this. how big would a horn have to be to hit mid 30 hz?
Don’t know how low Ritchie’s go down to.
But they would swamp the average size room, although @Ruprecht will be along soon to remind us that Japan man would put them in any room however small.
A straight front loaded horn would need to be huge. Don’t even go there. There are cheats though…
There were a few pairs of ½ size Lab 12 subs floating about here, which is a folded horn. Looks like this:
For scale, the multi cell is about a metre wide. This was a big improvement on the Onken, btw. Still didnt sound great.
A tapped horn is another solution. @SteadySteve has built several pairs, I think. His own ones are about 7 ’ long. They can be folded more…
Borh of these would need another channel between them and your mid horn, and it doesn’t help if that is small because the in-between channel would have to play high.
Posting in this thread has had me looking through pics of horns on my phone, quite nostalgic. Some of it is totally cray-cray, rooms full of Junk! ![]()
What didn’t you like about the onken cabinet? What driver were you using?
Altec 416 8-A.
The problem with the Onken was that I heard horn bass. I’d put a lot of effort and cash into getting them built, but then I was in too deep for my knowledge. Once I heard horn bass, I realised that I could put a load more effort and learning into something that to me sounded flawed, so I dumped them sharpish.
There are a load of issues you run up against once you start on this, and one of them is the speed of horns and the speed of a bass solution that isn’t horn loaded. Then if you are asking the Onken to do the bottom half of your mid, the mid- bass and the sub bass too… ![]()
I’m loitering about this thread like a dry drunk in a pub car park. ![]()

You can’t be far from putting them back up.

See I’ve never heard a full horn set horn set up so maybe I won’t too disappointed. I have the drivers and can build the cabinets my self. So it wouldn’t be a huge outlay to get them done.
@Rab1991 do yourself a big favour and don’t make the same mistake
.
It will spoil your ears for just about anything else. Don’t do it.
Is it really nearly 10 years since that Scalford? Jesus…
