Wtd: Low power/gain cool running summer amp

The weather the last couple of days is making listening very uncomfortable - the heat generated by the combination of windows on three sides and the sheer amount of heat kicked out by the Diavolo and it’s Border Patrol PS is huge.

Yes, there is an 8kw aircon unit in the listening room, but it’s slightly too noisy to have it running while the music is playing. If I switch it on an hour before the amps, the room is nicely cool but after AC off/amps on, the room heats up very quickly.

First world problem I know, but the solution might be a (class D?) low power/gain amp to drive the horns in summer.

Not sure even if there is such a thing?

Surely some kind of small tri path design with a few watts would be ok?

I haven’t heard one, but good reviews.

Also, maybe this. Not low power, but cool running.

I hear these are supposed to be good…

400w and 150w? I was thinking around 10w. The Gotos have a big label on them saying “MAX 5w”

Haha :heart_eyes::sob::roll_eyes:

Looks promising David, thanks :+1:

How about 25w of class A, total power consumption/heat output 130w?

What amount of heat do the current amps kick out?

Volume pot will allow you to adjust to suit, maybe?

Alternatively, bin the M6 and just use the integrated. :grinning:

I was looking at lower power amps for my active project, the Schiit Gjallarhorn F looked ideal.

A bit more expensive but I liked the look of the Bakoon CAP1001 and SCA7500K

Yes, the first amp I thought of when he suggested heat was a concern

I mean you could equally suggest he tries to force banana plugs into an oil heater

Never known a Class A amp that didn’t run hot

A metric shit tonne…

As well as cool running you also need it to be quiet presumably (given the sensitivity)? Something like a Neurochrome Mod 86 amp would seem to be a possibility, although it would probably involve Pete waving a soldering iron around.

If the solution here isn’t mercury I’m flouncing.

I’ve got some of the larger Schitt monos (Tyr) in temporarily - very good indeed :+1:

Class D and tubes? AGD Audion mk2/3

Class A/B but cool running - Luxman M200

Nord one 1200DM signature

Bel Canto Ref600M

Also I seem to recall, and may have misremembered this, but aren’t some of the First Watt designs like F7/ J2 biased AB and run a lot cooler?

You missed a bargain class D T+A on pfm last week.

There is a cheap class D Audio Research for sale on Maverick.

I get what you are saying but with the separate valve power supply and amplifier I wouldn’t be surprised if he is putting 500w into his room.

Just think a ‘standard’ meatman visiting would be putting the same amount of heat into the room as the A1 :grinning:
