Simon?
Your amps?
Ry cooder?
Ah, I remember Simon building some, I just don’t recall them being at Scalford.
In the big back room with Kev and possibly the best cable lifters ever.
Kipling?
I think a demo should be had on then fancy horns in Germany.
Don’t rush it just to have summat in time for a bake-off.
The reason people tend to DIY these things is that a manufacturer will spend loads of time balancing things, and sell a total of three units, after attending loads of shows. So all their costs mean there’s a huge margin.
You could build the whole Goto system for a fraction of the £30k price, let alone the £85k retail, but would you get the same balance, time alignment etc?
DIY allows you to build a monster system for just a few £k, but it’s really on you to make it sound acceptable. You’re unlikely to get it to sound really great without spending a lot of time, effort and self-hatred, whereas the Gotos here have had that all sorted. One hopes!
No, I’ll not be rushing to buy the Gotos before the bake off. I first need to audition them to ensure, as mentioned above, they are a significant upgrade from the Acapellas. Thing is, the area that needs improvement on the Acapellas is the bass, which ironically, could also be true of the Gotos with the back loaded bass bins.
I will however be trying very hard to ensure the Acapellas bass drivers are re-foamed before the bake off.
Maybe not a fraction - I am reliably informed that the cost of the 6 Goto drivers alone would be not far short of £30k.
Don’t spoil Adam’s schtick
The Goto drivers are made to integrate (There would have been a fair whack of R&D into this). The build of this system seems to be well documented and they are for sale from a reputable source. These things have a value.
I’d guess a full Goto rig is quite rare in the UK? Stefano’s in Italy is well regarded. In Jpn Along with Ale and YL they have stood the test of time. They should also hold their money. (Worth checking availability on diaphragms.)
x4 15" units will move a fair bit of air, whilst not the deepest the ‘experience’ of the bass may be very different.
Cool.
Surprising nobody has mentioned tapped horns to supplement the low frequencies on any option yet.
I don’t think any of the options mentioned are going to go that low. Maybe just different flavours of a similar thing.
Massive subs. Not the Bob ones. Need expertly integrating though.
Would be interesting to compare the goto’s with some Vox and subs. Just to see how the bottom ends are.
or
accapellas and a pair of speedy steve coffins in the corners would minimise the faff and give you more of what you know you like already I guess - I am tempted by the same route to make my otherwise settled on JBL K2 speakers more of a “project”
Goto’s look great though
The acapellas are supposed to go down to 28. Is the sub bit active? Would a different amp not make it betterer if not?
It’s a sealed bass enclosure with two compartments and an internal 10" driver facing upwards at about 45°. Isobaric style. But all passive.
The 1980s Nelson Pass designed Threshold amp I’m using (about 200wpc) is easily the best sound I’ve had from them.
Matching damping between speakers and amps is a thing. Might get the bass just right.
And measure the room response before chucking a big wodge at it.
Yes. I have 8 x 12" drivers and 2 x 18" drivers, and the bass is very natural. I don’t have it going very low, but it is quick and airy.
