I think that 4x 15" in scoops will give deep, fast bass. I imagine it will nudge below 35Hz, maybe by some way. There’s very little music that needs lower.
You could add a tapped horn, but it would need to be an 18" tuned below 20Hz to be worth bothering with. It would need to be cut off fairly brutally, which is hard in passive. I think it would be an exercise in frustration really, as well as use an awful lot of wood.
The A Cappella things give your standard hi-fi bass, taut and tuneful and deep enough, but horn bass that moves lots of air is so agile. I think that moving to the Gotos might sacrifice 5 or 10 Hz, but it’ll be a huge step up in quality.
What ever you do don’t go wearing your Captain Birdseye outfit, otherwise Kevin will apply his yacht owners premium. Either way enjoy what could be the most expensive coffee and biscuits you have ever had.
The re-foaming of the Acapella drivers is all in hand Dave. I’m dropping them off at Wembley loudspeakers next week when I pick up the daughters - they’re staying with us over the holiday. Then collecting them again just after New Year when I drop the daughters back to Ilford.
If you want a second (or possibly tenth at this rate) opinion at the audition, give me a shout.
Although getting away from work at the moment isn’t easy… it’s a 25 minute drive.
We did arrange them a bit better so the cables didn’t touch the floor.
One visitor asked why we had chosen those cable lifters in particular and I told him that we had tried quite a few but found that mass was the answer. We got the best sound with the heaviest cable lifters.
He stroked his chin and said ‘Yes I see how that would work’ thanked me and wandered off.
