I dare bet that old Syd’s shop won’t still be trading in Mansfield
No but it sounds like it was quite a place.

Great story!
Does radio work that far outside civilisation?
My portable radio picks up FM and DAB ok.
Funzie FM has a strong signal.
Putting the fun into Funzie.
Nice…
I have one of these (Technics ST8080) in the garage. Are they any good?
Pretty good, but swapping out the caps around the audio op amp and changing that op amp for something better like an OPA2134 made a noticeable improvement. Likes a strong signal though.
It’s been in a cold damp garage for 15 years until 5 minutes ago
Probably best if I let it dry out for a few days before attempting a switch on!
Oh, and if you are in modding mode get a proper 75ohm aerial connector on there, the screw down clamp is hopeless.
I would probably kill the tuner and/or myself if I tried any of that
Edit: I will be happy if it works. We have big plans for the garage next year. Bicycle workshop cum gym is what we are wanting. This will help provide tunes.
Similar to the diy effort I had planned
For the FM any old bit of wire, bent vertically upwards, should do - an untwisted coathanger, say (scrape the plastic off, obvs, where it connects to the tuner). There’s nothing to speak of broadcasting on AM these days, although you can use it to listen to all the RF noise that modern gizmos generate.

And, to prove Graeme’s point, a Quad FM2 plus a staight(ish) wire coathanger and I have half decent reception.
Bearing in mind the barn has 3’ thick stone walls, it’s quite a remarkable result.
