A bunch of hungover, overweight, unfit, middle-aged men going caving.
What could possibly go wrong?
Er, as the baby of the group at an age of 30 years, I resent that post.
tip:
if coming up the M1 sat nav will try to take you through Bradford however the route north out of there will be busy on a Friday afternoon
for those coming from down south do consider staying on the M1 to A1 and then through Harrogate, counterintuitively only adds 18 miles / 15 minutes WITHOUT traffic
Mmm, looking on Google maps that doesn’t look right ?
which route is it saying then?
I’ve decided the route I will take is the one to the hostel in Settle.
It’s not the route, it’s the post code, if you go on street view it looks wrong.
there is no street view on the road past the barn, that’s the postcode for Stainforth from their website
and will take you past the barn, look on Google maps
When the housing density gets low then postcodes can cover a wide area.
Map above shows both, so use satnav + postcode to get near.
Once out of Settle heading north it’s about 2km. The stone yard is a good marker, past that and up a rise and the barn is at the top on the left, with a sign outside. Turn in and take the track down to the barn (don’t go left into the owners’ house).
What time does that kick off on a Friday ? I’ll be coming along the M62 and for one reason and another I could be at Bradford early afternoon (say 1-2pm). Will it still be OK then ? Maybe the traffic delay will eat up the time needed to get past Dave’s 3:30 un-deadline.

Only one more sleep
looking forward to a great weekend

Well it’s just Canal Road out of Bradford is crap for traffic then you have lots of choke points after that until you reach the bypass.
Where are you coming from Graeme?
Didcot. But via Grimsby (yeah, long story as well as long journey).

I’d say 2 options;
- A1N from M62 (Ferrybridge) off at J45 through Collingham towards Harewood, down through Pool (will be a bit slow) towards Ilkley then to Skipton
- could also do off A1 at Wetherby through Harrogate and across A59 - nice scenic route and very little time difference / same miles
Interesting. Last night Google maps was recommending through Bradford (I don’t know it at all and it looks a twisty, messy route).
But now it’s suggesting your first route as being 3 miles longer but 5-30 minutes quicker and your second as being another couple of miles but still less likely to go really badly wrong than Bradford.
I’ll change my plans. Thanks.

Bradford is bleaugh…
Curiously it has a ring road - the A6177 - but Google Maps resolutely insists you’re better off driving right through the maze which is the city centre. What’s that about ?
