I have this one - excellent

Need one of them for lp covers I’m missing

Was tempted by the Canon 1100, but then the P900 had a bit of discount and I was suckered.

I used to have an Epson Pro 4000, this is a much nicer size.

How often to you make your own prints, and what’s a min outlay for a decent printer?

Always been happy enough to outsource it, so am curious to hear your thoughts

I did consider it. (I used to make my own prints)

Ignoring the capital cost of the printer, I reckoned that the cost of ink & paper was almost the same as outsourcing it.

I realise that it is more flexible and achieves instant results but I’m not sure if they would be as good (or better, of course) than my usual supplier.

Very much depends.

I enjoy printing, I like having total control and I’m very impatient. I also like big prints.

DSCL above charge £29 for a 16”x20” print on A2 fancy photo rag paper, that’s £8 a sheet. Even with £5 in ink (more like £2-3) it doesn’t take many prints for me to justify having the printer with a bit of man maths.

Edd’s photo printing service will of course soon be open with extortionate fees and questionable customer service.

Marginal AA discount.

I need a printer anyway so for me it’s more about the enjoyment of printing, although it can be a PITA - there is a certain pleasure in having taken a nice photo setting it up for print and it coming out looking great - sending it off for printing feels like I lost a bit of ownership. You can also choose your own paper, download colour profiles yada yada but nobody but you will know when the picture is in the frame.

Truth is I don’t print that often but sometimes the mood takes me and it’s there in my hand straightaway - they are nice gifts, and I’ve rarely done that but should….
