Architecture

I very much enjoyed walking around the LBJ Presedential Library in Austin when I was there. Something of a Thunderbirds feel about it, and also a facinating museum inside.

I thought they had built this in its place?

Really quite impressive inside

That’s awful.

Its locally called “The Wedding Cake” :grinning:
There is a roof garden with great views of the city and a escalator between floors.

All the mod cons!

The dutch museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam has built a depot for their collection not in exhibition… The idea is that you can visit the depot by yourself to see the full collection of 151.000 pieces or have a guide show you around… Wonder how the security measures look like…

We tried to go there when we were in R-to-the-Dam but it was a bit of a building site at the time

Rotterdam is fantastic architecturally, sadly because it got the crap bombed out of it, and the crafty Dutchies are better at getting their shit together than us

altho I have to admit this was my favourite bit

top 3 fantasy places to live - Anterwerp, Rotterdam, Hamburg.

Not a Brexit in sight.

On the actual site of the original library are two office buildings, good buildings but nothing unique to the city. The new Mecanoo designed library is better in the flesh, IMO.

Lived in Antwerp and Rotterdam they were ok but not great. Put Düsseldorf on your list, ‘Paris of the North’

These are all ports so not sure where the fantacy bit comes from? Perhaps its ship watching?
If its fantacy you want then try Cesky Krumlov in the Czech republic
Medieval buildings built on a bend in the river valtava with one of europes largest intact castles with a unique hall decorated with figures from italian comedy theater.

Traditionally wealthy and diverse places.

Similar vibes with Bristol, Liverpool and Glasgow in this country / soon to be these countries.

I agree about Rotterdam, but we love Antwerp. We find it difficult to fault.
I guess it could be different if you lived there.

Living in Dutch cities is like an acquired taste.
Rotterdam however has amazing architecture. They also nickname constructions. The bridge a few posts ago is called ‘the swan’. The verdict for the depot is not out yet, but ‘soup bowl’ is a contender.

A place I like is the market hall, a huge food court, not far awy from another (old) landmark, the cube apartments:

Love that area of Rotterdam, that market hall is the reason FoL#2 Lauren is thinking of becoming an architect.

Spent several hours in the market hall. Great space.

If I lived in these apartments in Cologne, still would wonder if you would bounce jumping up and down…

Well I was younger and I was more or less by myself. Had some good times there and a fantastic job the with Matthew Hall as a Project Engineer (Freelance) for Hooker Chemical plants. Bars (one for Nazis) and Pub (Red Lion). Good restaurants and cafe life.
