Dicking about with crap old cars

Pretty sure its a Mitsubishi Sigma like it says in the title.

I had one, the 3L V6. I really liked it. Luxury Jap barge before Lexus were a thing.

My reply and question was to the orange Caterham a few posts above.

Ah yes apols - Didn’t look at it properly

Yes it is!

It’s an r400 so it’s got quite a few standard mods. Significantly strengthened internals, cams, roller barrel TB’s.

As a result is running 210bhp at the wheels at present, which for a 520kg car is pretty terrifying!

Yes it is. 1.8 vhpd

It’s one of the angriest power plants I’ve ever driven; and than includes a 991.2 gt3 RS

Nice. Its been 20+yrs since I had a rover k series, I recognised the cam cover profile.
It must rev (and sound) very aggressively with those massive throttle bodies.

HGF?

What’s HGF?

Head gasket failure - TechWiki.
As discussed a lot on the MG forums back in the day by MGF owners and people who built KMidgets.

Yeah, I thought it might be.

Is generally a non issue on caterhams, but it’s also something that can be avoided very easily. The failure happens due to a poor design on the part of the cooling system in the car. But a couple of very simple mods to the thermostat and it’s a non issue.

I’ve had two K series caterhams and they’ve been rock solid

I.e. the coolant running backwards at low speed according to some sims done by ex Rover people who work with MrsKettle.

Mostly it’s because stupidly, they put the thermostat on the return path of the cooling system, as far away from the hot water as possible. So it’s not until the system has got so hot that it has made the incoming coolant hot enough that the stat finally opens. This causes quite significant thermal variance in the engine and often led to subtle warps in the head. The gasket itself was rarely the actual failure.

To fix you can either relocate the stat to the correct side of the engine, or as I do, you can drill a 2mm hole in the thermostat facing, which allows a small amount of coolant to flow at all times, creating more steady thermal state and less sudden cooling.

I fitted a QED remote thermostat to mine.

Wiring looms, one for two way switching from two locations for four light circuits. The other for a three way switch to combine reverse lights with rear work lights plus two way switching of work lights from two locations fed from leisure battery when parked up off road.

A wiring ‘loom’ that is actually a wiring loom on a hi-fi forum?
We will have none of that sort of thing here!

(If this was actually a hi-fi forum :grinning:)

The astute among you will see a giant hole in the side of what should be a solid crank case. The rod on cylinder 2 decided it didn’t want to be inside the engine any more.

It did so at 100mph on the main straight at donington!

Bugger!

Better there than through Starkey’s Bridge. It’s a much shorter walk.
