And double the depth and make them 10cm wider don’t tell Claire.
So the more I look at crossover designing the more I’m liking the idea of going active…
Is this getting out of hand now?
I’m probably going to build three amps and get a dsp.
So now I have more things to decide on, what amps what dsp
First idea in my head is something like a hypex module on the bass and some pass alephs (don’t know which) on mid and high.
To get things going, consider a six channel amp - the Rotel ones are readily available, cheap and decent. I still use one, as I haven’t built loads of Nelson Pass amps still!
The DSP side of things is tricky BUT…
Behringer always came out too low-fi.
miniDSP (complete unknown to me),
might be reasonably cost effective.
DEQX mega bucks.
Computer based offerings like CamillaDSP?
The flexibility you have to try and quickly compare lots of X/O set up points, slopes, control bass room modes, time align, easily switch drivers with different impedances (as things evolve, which they will), not needing Zobels, L-Pads etc etc.
It’s a complete no brainer.
I splurged the cost of the Najda DSP board on Inductors and capacitors for the Tapped horn and mid bass horns alone!
Just to get 2nd order!
Food for thought
I think I have a spare Asus u7 USB sound card you can borrow or buy, which is decent quality. Get a silent NUC PC (a cheap Celeron one is fine) or laptop, and you have working system using JRiver.
Nadia seems unobtainium now from a quick google, unless someone is selling one.
Not sure about the PC option and the extra faff with that. But things are already getting extreme
The PC option is good for getting things up and running quickly, at little or no expense. I really recommend getting things going with what you have, rather than spending huge amounts on solutions that get binned.
You can use an old laptop, borrow a sound card, buy a £150 six channel amp and get great sound and the ability to sort out the crossover, use DSP and convolution. Once you know where you’re at, you can upgrade the DACs, amps and crossover system.
I’ve a minidsp 2x4HD if you want something to play around with without commitment . Can do 3-way if you used it in mono for development.
Can the MiniDSP products do convolution yet? I don’t think they can.
I like the idea of a simple, dedicated box that just works, but forcing upsampling and the lack of sufficient power to do FIR is a showstopper for me.
So what your saying is I need to take a Nadja by force from a fellow abattoirist?
Najda can’t do heavy amounts of FIR either, not at 96KHz sampling.
Probably can at 48KHz, but when I tried 48 it was meh SQ wise!
It can’t do much of anything at 192, I did get it to do X/Os and some room mode control on my rig, but the processors were near the red and the SQ was no different to 96!
If my Najda broke, and I hadn’t acquired a spare (just in case), I think I’d be looking at dedicated lite PC with Linux and the sound card option I think.
Nadja is easy to set up and super convenient to use every day though.
It might be able to do enough if you don’t have a crossover at 100Hz though - lower frequency stuff requires many more taps. Although half the point is being able to DSP the room nodes…
Yeah. I’ve been meaning to try FIR sometime. Never got around to it.
Not sure there’ll be enough taps.
I only PEQ some minus dB at 29 and 75Hz.
Must give it a go but there’s a learning curve to doing it.
Loading raw coefficients here I come… Maybe🙂
Jesus, I thought going active was supposed to be less faff!
It is, trust me, I’ve done both.
Well I’ve let others do the work and will hopefully just stick it all together
When I first met @Wayward he was trying to make a passive multi way horn system work, and failing miserably!
Well yeah, I think mine will probably stay as a two way. We’ll see.
I think what you need to do is buy my Vitavox multicell horns off me so that I can put the money towards a @coco built PLLXO, then you can have my Najda. If we start the process now I reckon you’ll have the Najda in about 2028.
