Thinking I might drive all the way to Lisbon to be deprived of my kidneys:

Nice thing for those of you wanting a alternative heating source this winter.
I will stick with my BP 300b.
more likely
Gorgeous amp, but you need to be very good friends with @coco or @Valvebloke I reckon!
I didn’t realise they had a bit of a rep.
I think one did on here, Papa’s I beleive.
I had the 300b integrated, no issues at all, still going strong.
I have also repaired one of the 845 amps
I think @cobbler had one of the integrateds a few years back.
Well remembered, I had a Legend (KT66). It worked fine for me.
I remember Coco rebuilding tracks on a PCB to get it going at Scalford, after it self immolated
Yes that was @PapaLazarou’s where it had burned through its PCB because a tube was faulty. We were listening to it last night as it happens! Been fine ever since I rebuilt it, lol
To be fair Phil’s was a 220V version, being run at 240V. He now uses a variac to drop the voltage to 220V which will help for sure.
Has the reliability improved
No idea only pointing at an advert elsewhere for something that could be tasty.
Unless of course you’re asking about the BP 300b.
That can be a real issue with these. I fixed Simon’s (@ZiggyMarley as was) which was a 220V one. It’d actually run successfully for a long time at 240V but in the end things did get too hot. A 20V bucking transformer got everything back into its happy place.
At my old flat the nominal 240V was closer to 250V, not good news for a 220V Amp
That was mine, looked like I had a lucky escape. Surely this shouldn’t be an issue, Italy is supposed to conform to EU power supply standards so why design for 220v. Barking.
Pete has basically rebuilt my 845 amp over the years. It’s seen a fair few upgrades. Had no issues with it since the faulty TJ Full Music 845 (would never buy again) took the power PCB with it.
I paid £2k for the amp over 12 years ago. I still very much enjoy listening with it. I have no complaints.
I don’t think that the voltage ever changed anywhere. Most of Europe is 220V, UK is 240V and the definition of 230V with a wide tolerance. I get over 250V, which is just within the tolerance.
The problem is that unregulated linear power supplies are simple and sounds best to audiophiles, and these work by being a simple multiple of the input power supply. So if you feed it 250V when it was designed for 220V, everything runs hot.
You could solve this by using switching power supplies, but audiophiles hate those. Or you could get high voltage regulated supplies, but they’re really expensive.
