Gigs I'm going to. The Gyroscope diaries

Impressively unphotogenic (almost pitch dark with two guys black robes in a lot of smoke) so here are some amps beforehand.

Wish I’d had a seat the night before in Bristol! What did you think?

Yes, I was highly sceptical about it being seated, but it worked well for this kind of performance.

I was talking it through with the (committed jazz-phobic) wife this morning and said that martini-making-lady had asked what kind of music it was. I ended up blurting out “experimental drone metal”.

Wife: I thought it was jazz

Me: Two guys with guitars that don’t sound like guitars any more. Chords that last five minutes. No discernible rhythm or melody.

Wife: So, jazz-metal then.

Err, yeah.

I enjoyed it a lot and it will be very memorable, but it’s probably not something I’d do very frequently.

obligatory Spinal Tap Jazz Odyssey reference

I reached the same conclusion.

I imagine it is the sort of music that makes more sense as a performance than a recording, like opera, or folk music in a pub. I am not quite saying you need the visuals.

I was worried that seeing the live performance might put me off listening to their studio stuff at home. The two scenarios are so wildly different that this is not the case.

I want to see it live now and I’ve never heard them

Reminds me of the story of Floyd spending months in the studio getting household objects to sound like instruments. After spending quite a while getting a rubber band to sound like a bass guitar, someone suggested, why don’t we just use a bass guitar

One of the accounts I follow on Insta posted footage of this and, old & befuddled as I am, I hadn’t a clue what or who it was. Looked and sounded terrifying though. Never a bad thing.

I have witnessed both The Necks at Village Underground and Evan Parker in the Adelphi (Leeds) load the room and create standing waves of rotating columns of sound. If that happened at home I think we would be freaking out and ordering loads of room damping foo.

A gig I’m not going to - capes and Zimmer frames at a Yarmouth holiday park . Some here may like it…
