Gigs I'm going to. The Gyroscope diaries

They seem to like playing Bristol. Will be the fourth time I’ve seen them, I think.

Oh nice, I love Little Barrie. Need to see where else they are playing.

Heading north, York / Glasgow / Newcastle.
Very humble chap considering CV!

Shot from the recent ‘Moonlight - The Philip Lynott Enigma’ stage play in Dublin this week. Original guitarist Eric Bell (on the left) made a couple of appearances during the show. Pretty good overall and Lizzy was blasting out from many of the nearby pubs throughout the day.

Anglo-Italian jazz singer Georgia Mancio and band in Sheffield, part of national tour

Have two tickets to this. Sarah is happy to come with me, but is also relatively “on the fence”, so if anyone else wants to come then there’s a spare ticket here.

I’ll wander down to town this weekend, might have a bit of a squawk

Nice one John.
I am going to see King Creosote at St George’s Kemptown on Saturday week.

Seeing him in Liverpool Cathedral in June

Got Tuesday off. Monday night Kuunatic are playing at the Exchange. I saw them try and play last year but the gig lost it when the bass guitar went pfffzzzzt.

Reckon they’re worth another go.

After a heads-up from Dave @octh I got out last night to see The Haar play Harwell Village Hall. It was a fun night, and they are good !

Cormac told the story of how he and Adam first teamed up with Molly, the singer. They were at a bodhran festival on Inis Oirr (the island in the Father Ted credits) which is a place with three pubs and no police. So there was a more-or-less continuous party going on. Then ‘a flame-haired girl’ silenced a pub full of lively drunks with an a capella song. They talked her into walking down to the beach and just managed to record The Lark into a camera for Youtube before the sun set. “Great”, said Cormac, “we’re never going to have to rehearse again !”.

Here’s the actual Youtube video (it sounds like the sound has had a bit post-processing)

and here’s a few seconds of Molly warming up before the gig (not my video, obvsly)

It seems that in 2014 she won an All Ireland Solo Singing contest, restricted to children aged 16 or under. So in 2019 she’d have been just 21 (or younger).

Glad you enjoyed it Graeme, they are unusual in all being top-notch performers, a sort of folky supergroup - albeit not well known. Adam and Murray are both excellent classical musicians, but relish the freedom that this and other genres allow them. Cormac is doing a PhD on the role of the bodhran when not teaching or playing, and Molly is a superb singer who is now starting to write as well (see below)

After some parking advice, please.

Off to the Forever now festival on Sunday 22nd June at the Milton Keynes Bowl.

I think will try and park close by and drive back after. The only worry is getting somewhere close enough to be in and away reasonably quickly on foot.

Anyone know where to book? Hopeful there is something close??

Sessions going well, spread across 8 pubs in town. Nipped in to a Scandi/Nordic tunes session to bag an early seat for the subsequent singing session. The music was a nice change, though not sure that this next-gen folkie being exposed to fiddle and dance was totally into it yet.
